Hi,just bought my first proper bike there 2 days ago (had pitbikes and stupid things like that before)

Its a 2000 cr125,just bought for messing about the fields really, nothing too serious.

Everything was 110% first day of riding, started first kick everytime

Next day i came out and kicked it,first kick away it went, sat waiting for it to warm up and then realised i could do with more petrol,so went and got it bla bla bla

Once new petrol was in it ran for a minute then died off, cleaned the carb and changed spark plugs and eventually got it going an hour later

My problem is,ever since that it hasnt went properly

PLayed about with the mixture a bit,was originally running 40:1 when i got it,then we ran it at 32:1 and currently 45:1 to get it going as well as possible.

Nothing seems to fix it,bought 2 new plugs for it today and it started first kick but was very smokey and was continually bogging down

Full throttle in 2nd gear it sounded as if it was hitting a limiter like a car,it didnt even have the power to lift my front wheel on concrete.

So again, new plug, started first time again and was again very smoky (blue) and felt as though it wouldnt rev out fully.

A cr85 went out past it yesterday as top end it was just burbling and bogging down

Oil around the exhaust and bits of the engine aswell.

Our thoughts are, crankshaft oil seals??? Would this cause the above symptoms?

It will also rev to a certain point, bog a bit then rev on past it again

Any ideas are appreciated before i lift the engine out tomorrow

Thanks

I have had similar symptoms with a sticky power valve. Could just need a good cleaning.

Of course, it could be something else.

Thanks mate will give it q clean tomorrow.

Also meant to add there is a leak coming from just above where the exhaust leaves the head aswell, maybe just a wee gasket but i doubt it would helo the cause.

Does it sound like crankshaft seals to anyone before we go ahead and do it...

First, don't mix it 45:1. It's supposed to be 32:1. If it doesn't run right then, somethings wrong.

It was on 32:1 mate and was no better so will sort this problem first then go back to running it at 32:1 before it does any damage. We thought the problem could have been the mixture thats the only reason it was changed, did go better for a while on the leaner mixture but soon completely bogged down and cut out

Also, oil around the exhaust is natural for two strokes.

Its coming from the wee gasket above the exhaust totheleft if your looking from the cooler.

There is enough oil that it has splattered all over the engine casing

It shouldn't bog down when it has 32:1. I don't think it's possible to damage it from running what your supposed to, but it's messed up anyways, so just take it all apart. Better have some money lying around.

Got crankshaft oil seals today,no change what so ever

Still smokey as hell and splutters on high revs

Did you check the power valve? When it gets all gunky the slide can stick open. This would explain the high rpm sputtering. And the lack of top end power.

The power valve should be cleaned out (with contact cleaner, or something of the like) every time a top end is done. I don't know the maintenance history on the bike, but if it hasn't been cleaned for 2 or 3 years, it could be pretty scary in there.

It shouldn't be too complicated to do. I've never done a CR power valve, but I've done a couple Yamaha's. Just pay very close attention to how the components come out, and make sure they all get back in the same way.

After you clean the powervalve, stop mixing it so rich and go back to 32:1 and our problems should be solved.

45:1 would result in a richer fuel mixture, as more fuel, less oil in the mix allows more fuel to flow through the jetting circuit.
32:1 would result in a more oil rich mixture than 45:1 ,but a leaner overall fuel mixture flowing through the jetting circuit, due to the increased amount of oil in the mixture.

Remember, the first number in the mix ratio is parts fuel, while the second number is parts oil.

Many of the flat track motorcycles and micro sprint cars using Honda CR250 engines have the power valve locked in the fully open position or removed totally, as they use more of the top end of the power range in those types of racing.

If the valve is stuck in the closed position, low end power would be there, while top end would be lacking.

If it is stuck open fully, low end will suffer, while top end power would be still some what normal.

The top end will live on leaner "oil mix" ratio's for a good while. It's the lower rod bearing that usually suffers the most when leaner oil mixtures are used for longer periods of time.

Compression test for ring seal condition, check the reeds, inspect needle and seat in the carb, set float level to spec.

Usually a leaky primary side main seal leak will show symptoms of excessive smoke, engine never running "clean", along with a low oil level in the transmission.

A pressure test will tell more, but by filling the transmission oil to spec, and monitoring the oil level before each ride, can give an indication of a leaky main seal on the primary side.
