If I moved back to SoCal I would def. move to the Lake Elsinore area. The housing isn't that expensive and it is centrally located. Within an hour or less of all the great tracks, within an hour or so to 4 sx races, not a ton of traffic and right smack dab in the middle of the MX/SX Mecca. Friggin' beautiful place, and most of the factory riders live a few mintues away. I thought Elsinore was a fun track, the soil wasn't great but the vet track was the shit! Really fun.
The vet track was a weekly thing for me. The funny thing is, the times I saw Wardy, Stewart, Hughes, etc.. they were all riding that instead of the main track!

Can I ask you a question? How close were you to the track? At glen helen they put those ugly chain link fences around the track but at least you get so close sometimes you have to duck the roost. To me that white fencing is a fail.

Also, fans never complained about HIKING up mount saint helens so why spend a billion dollars on concrete walk ways? It's cool for guys in wheel chairs and pit tooties in high heels but for me it's a fail.
No matter what, your mind is made up that any national in So Cal is a fail if it isn't at Glen Helen. Well guess what? Glen Helen ain't coming back, so stop being so negative and get over it. DC had a chat with the people at Glen Helen not too long ago, and they have no interest in having a national anytime soon.

The LE track looked less than stellar to me. greased manure layered over cement ... Pala looked better ... at least from my side of the TV.

D.C.-

The will call lines were the WORST experience that I've ever had getting tickets for ANY event. I left me house @ 6am to make sure that I would be able to see practice and find a few friends to get a good spot (which was a tough thing to do). The white tent had a "PROMOTERS WILL CALL" sign with a small line and 6 other lines that were all ready very long (7:30). Knowing that I always have to wait in the promoters will call line, that's what we did. After 45 minutes, we made it up to the front and were tod that we had to wait in the long line to get our wrist bands. We missed most of the practice, standing in line in the hot sun, total bummer...

What I realized while standing in line-

Everyone thinks that they are somehow special and shouldn't have to stand in the long line, because THEY are special. Most tried begging and pleading to get "VIP" treatment. It's gotta be tough dealing with all of us "SPECIAL" people that are fortunate enough to get "COMPLIMENTARY" tickets/ bands.

I've gotten to know some of the ladies that work Will Call over the yrs...I could tell that the Johnny-Cool-Guy with the "Where's my FREE EVERYTHING Hook-up" was already getting old for the ladies...on FRIDAY.

I'm really glad that you actually "Get it".

Here's some "How To" gold...some of which you probably won't like:

Get there by 6:30...seriously.
Stay somewhere local the nite before & after, if possible, becuase a FULL day in that Sun can kick your ass...or...BEST alt-plan: Stay at the Track and get all of this stuff out of the way on Friday...maybe even Ride a bit?

Very cool post.

Thanks for sharing a report from "A reasonable man".

So you're saying that using chain link fencing is a good idea to line the track with? Now I know how to value your opinion.

I was there this weekend, made the drive from AZ. I liked Pala better. I posted up on the big hill in the by the finish line in middle of the track and watched the back section. Pretty good view from there, I couldn't complain about that. A lot of people with umbrellas out there which blocked the view but I can't lie, I wish I had one too because it was hot as hell out there. Mx sports and the track promoters can't control the weather but what they should be able to control is the track side drink tents having 100 full cases of beer on ice but being sold out of water! The drink tents were re stocked around 4 pm at which point it was pretty much cloudy and breezy. I don't mind paying 10 bucks for a cold beer (I had three) and 3 bucks for cold water because I don't want to have to lug shit around the track all day. But when its a 100 degrees out and you're standing in the sun you gotta have water available!

Only One way in and out was a bitch.. After the first motos, the crowd, trying to get out to their car or leave was backed up so much, that I thought a riot was going to break out. Some one finally made the decision to just open the gates and forget about the hand stamping thing.
We walked all the way around the back side of the track to get to the grand stand / pit area. Only to find a fence and security, telling us that we have to walk all the way back around the place to get 50' from where we were.
Way to much track side campers and vip areas that closed off viewing for the ticket paying people.
The up close experience was not there.. The fencing was to far from the track.
Would it be too much to ask for some water fountains ? I know they are trying to sell bottled water and all, but that just screams.... greed!
Knowing this was a first year deal.. I hope changes will be made. I'll see next year. If not, next year will be my last.

No Steve, I don't think he's talking about the type of fencing, but rather the distance from the track.
We watch supercross with binoculars. But the experience you get from being track side at a national, seemed to be lacking at the lake.

I get it. Before working inside the fence I spent plenty of years outside of it, whether at Carlsbad, Saddleback, Glen Helen, etc.

I've been at Glen Helen when RC was using the chain link fencing to bank off of on a 125, and it shook the metal bars. I've also thought that for as gnarly (and cool) that it was back in the day at Glen Helen (or Saddleback, or Carlsbad) there was a lot of unsafe conditions that wouldn't fly now.

I don't think riders should have to worry about cheese graters (AKA chain link fencing) that's too close to the track.

At Elsinore I don't think there's a watering system in place, and they rely on water trucks. There has to be room on both sides of the track for access, both for water, and emergency vehicles.

i assume it is hella expensive to obtain insurance for a national event. i wonder if they have stipulations and such that require set distances for safety and shit.

the "good ole days" are long gone...sad to say. man we used to cross the track when it was clear with no issues...cept for the occasional t-bone into one of my drunk friends by a rider. Wink

Bob, that is a great point. I forgot about the insurance. If someone was seriously injured and Doc Bodnar couldn't get to them...damn we would have being saying..."why didn't they put access roads...its common sense" Smile

Maybe next year they can add some big screens...most events have them like NHRA, NASCAR, Golf, WWF, Music concerts, etc.
Maybe a big screen in a shaded tented area where fans can just kick it with your 30 dollar beer. As fans, we need to start expecting more and that is possibly why the turn out was low...we knew they would not cater to us. Watching at home as it's advantages.

Dennis90 is a douche. Enough said.

For me. If they raced around in a open field I would watch it. I am there to watch the racing and the battles. I could give a fuck how big the crowd is..... Glen Helen had its ups and its downs. Literally! But this new Elsinore track was pretty good for a first go round.

i hate ragging on tracks that i see on tv, especially outdoors, but that track looked like a piece of shit.

huge downgrade from Pala and even bigger downgrade from GH, imo.

but i don't see the behind the scenes, so maybe it was a success.

but as a drunk viewer on television, it looked ghey, bro

At least you have Uddevalla for couple more years. And Gothenburg SX. In Finland... well, we had the EWC race last weekend and that's about it.

In my opinion the track was so spread out that it there were not any great places to see much. The biggest joke was that they had every one of the grandstands closed for VIP only. They even tried to open them up later as a $5.00 upgrade and by the middle of the day everyone was going in anyways. Also, they did not let any coolers in and did not bother to tell anyone in advance, even a sign at the entrance gate to the parking lot would've helped. One thing good was that after watching the women's final and then hanging around to pick up some cheap moto-tees, the parking lot was starting to move and it only took us about 30min to get to the freeway.
