Check out the mfg of them then decide. Not hating just saying you should buy a helmet made by a company that's main focus is making helmets....or at least MX equipment.

Agreed, I was just curious about them. I have always worn Bell's and doubt I would get anything but a Bell.

The orignal JT ALS helmets were made by Bell. Not sure who is making the current model.

I think your mistaken. John had a helmet factory in Idaho, if I remember, and there was a mysterious fire at one time. Can't remember, this was a long time ago. I remember LaPorte wearing a Techno helmet, from France, and it being used in a variety of JT ad shots at the end of a season. Soon after the first open face JT helmet arrived. If anyone remembers Karsten Berg, he'll know the whole story.

I do not know all the history but the 1987 catalog advertised them as made by Bell.

Thanks for the clarification. Just thinking about the early open face models. I'll see if I can get my story straight.

The early ALS-1 open face and the ALS-2 were made by Bell, I also had a late 80's/early 90's ALS-2 and that was made in France.

There are 4 different factorys in China that make 98 % of the helmets in the world, some companys specify specs like shell shape, foam and graphics, others just order stock production.

The most important thing about a helmet is fit the second most important thing is FIT.

I have one and I love it. The sizing is pretty comparable to other helmets I have used- FLY, Fox, and Shoei. The cheek pads were a little tight at first(I have a chubby face), but once they broke in it wasn't an issue. Weight also seems in line with the other lids I have, maybe a little lighter. I was a little worried about it being hot when I ordered it(I got the black and orange combo) because it doesn't look like it is that well vented. I was totally spuprised after wearing it because it is actually vents really well and stays cool. Probably better than atleast half the helmets I have used.

The only issue I have had is the small buckle that you clip the extra flap of chin strap to broke on like the 4th ride.

As for the MC team, I heard the main reason they stopped wearing it was because they has a couple times when heavy roost/small crashes blew the vidors off- and they didn't like riding around sans visor. Just rumor of course. As far as safety goes, the thing is SNELL approved and that is really the only way I know to certify if the helmet is safe or not. Otherwise buy a Shoei because "they have a reputation" for being safer.(not knocking Shoei, they are awesome helmets)
