air fork question?

Edited Date/Time 6/20/2012 7:17pm
so with the new forks the kawi and honda are running , what happens if you blow a seal on race day ? does the front end go limp ? do you crash and eat it ?

with the spring foks you blow a seal on race day you leak a little oil and get them fixed monday not a super big deal . but what will it be like with these new forks?

The oil seal is not the one that holds the air........

The air is held in a bladder as far as I know so it's not a matter of blowing a seal so to speak. The whole fork tube isn't pressurised just the air bag

Let me get this straight. A seal can be in bad enough shape to leak oil but it will still hold air? Not in the world that I live in.

I am baffled by the air suspension. I really just don't get it. I hate to sound like a dumbass but I'll eat my pride to find out a little more.

I am guessing the front suspension still has actual springs right?

There is no longer a clicker to adjust the suspension-like 12 compression/10 rebound and instead you use the amount of air to make it softer or stiffer?

Clickers adjust the damping (velocity controlled force), not the spring (position controlled force). With these forks, the damping is in one leg, the air spring is in the other leg.

Regular forks still have an air chamber. Compressing air gives a different force rate to compressing a spring.

haha sorry dumbass but....

The air replaces the spring not the valving. So there is still comp/rebound clickers but now with a air valve to adjust the psi for different spring weights.

In the fork diagram, the portion that is labeled "dampening cylinder" there is oil in there, and it works the same as the dampening cylinder in a regular set of modern forks.

Got it. That explained a lot.

I am guessing you can still adjust the fork oil levels than to make it stiffer or softer or is that gone as well?
