VID - What happened to river crossings in MX?

In light of the recent lightning delay at Thunder Valley, I thought it might be good to review some old school footage of a race that looked much worse and check out an obstacle long since done away with - the river crossing. Enjoy the video and the voice of Larry Maiers as he commentates the 1991 MX opener at Hangtown.

What other obstacles can you think of that no longer exist today?

How about wood ramp jumps... (3:40) ....and wooden bridges... (8:11) in European gp's back in the day.

The rivers show up once in a while, like at Budds a couple years ago.

Budds Creek had a full time water crossing in the late 70's early 80's in the turn by the table top at the bottom of Big Gulp.

Will have to see if I can fund the picture I saw on facebook of it.

Oddly enough, here's the thing that stood out in that 1969 video to me:
It's obviously hot. All the dudes in the pits are in their nut-hugger shorts and shirtless, and the ladies are wearing bathing suits. But, if you'll notice, some of the fans are dressed like it's a winter day, wearing suits/ties, sweater vests, and long sleeves. Either questionable editing, or questionable wardrobe decisions.

Oddly enough, here's the thing that stood out in that 1969 video to me:

Back in those days in Europe, most racing fans attended the races in very formal attire.
But some other things seem to go full circle though.... 4 strokes were kicking ass in the 60's like they do now. Tongue

offroad racing and gncc have the rights to all the good river spots

They were replaced by unsupervised irresponsible photograher crossings.
