Goes to show you how insane Carmichael, Stewart and McGrath were... but also how deep the field is nowadays compared to the 90's, and 00's.

People have always said the field is deeper now. Problem is they said it in the 70's, and then the 80's, 90's and so on. If you look at a list of top 40 riders from any era you will be surprised at just how many good riders there were on the track at any given time. It's just that some were at their peak, some on their way up and some on their way out. Just like now.
RC and Bubba would do the same thing now that they did then. Bubba still is actually. How far ahead of third were he and Dungey at Freestone, a minute? And that was against a supposedly deeper than ever field.

Damn, Stewarts numbers are unreal in the tiddler class! and like hellion said, I don't think the class is any deeper today than it was when James was in it. James was just that much better! Everyone's skill level is just more even in todays 250 class. Too bad, they didn't run the last national in 2003(Troy), I think James would have 3 C'ships in the class if they did!

Another crazy stat not listed is the races Stewart lost in those 3 years. I think, of the 3 he lost, he still won a moto on the day, but his bike broke in the other moto. That's just crazy.

2 of the losses were in his rookie year and the other one was Red Bud 2004 and yes he won a moto and he fried the clutch in the other moto I think. If not for that he would have had a perfect outdoor season that year
