Gold has peaked to much already, I'm friends with a couple of successful financial advisers and the say the smart money now is in farmland, art and classic cars. But depends on how much cash you want to put aside.

If all hell breaks loose, what good is gold? You cannot eat it or burn it to keep you warm. Some of you people kill me.

Farming here in the states has actually become profitable for some in the last eight years or so, raising land prices. Also many farms only come up for sale every couple of generations unless someone is paying top money. Not really a good investment just to speculate on.

A lot of the sentiment in here distresses me. Firstly, that so many of you feel the sky is falling down (to quote a feathered friend) and secondly that the answer is to arm yourselves to the max! For a great nation, the sense of insecurity and paranoia is astounding. What exactly do you feel you've been doing to make your whole system degenrate into total anarchy???? And arming yourselves f.f.s. can't you see that guns etc are the cause of so many of your problems? When New Orleans got flooded, chaos reigned and armed gangs roamed the steeets. Your governments response..... more guns. years on and a lot of that city is still devastated. Compare that to the responses to the various tsunamis in Asia. I'll bet Thialand is already better than before and Japan will be fully back to normal before too long. Earthquakes in Europe and New Zealand - same thing.

Stop hankering after the 'good old days' of the wild west and start becoming the civillised nation you're more than capable of being.

Im not surprised it distresses you PB. And for good reason.

But if you lived in the States you would understand why arming yourself seems like a good idea. In your case, you might look to your neighbors and see civilized folks that wouldnt go apeshit if the sky was falling down. When we look to our left and right, we arent so comfortable with our neighbors, and I think that is for good reason.

As for why we think the "sky is falling down", I guess you'd have to be in the USA to fully understand it. Police forces are growing every day. More and more prisons are being built every day. Public services budgets are being slashed. And our constitutional rights have eroded with every "Patriot Act" type bill that gets passed. Every month there seems to be some new bill on the table that further attacks our freedoms. Stuff like making it illegal to refuse vaccinations in certain situations, DNA databases for law enforcement, detention of US citizens without trial or charges, drones that are scanning U.S. homes, etc. This isnt the book 1984, this has become much worse!

Our media is bought and paid for. Those that see that are the vast minority. Those that dont see it are continuing to get brainwashed. And our political system is simply a wing of the corporate mega-complex.

We as a nation spend more on our military than the rest of the world combined. We have been at war for more years than not during our countries existence. We have become the first true world empire. Eventually that will end. This cant go on forever so forgive us for feeling such a "doomsday" mentality.

Total anarchy would be refreshing and better for the world as a whole. But I wouldnt expect you, being British, to fully grasp that. You guys have a different culture than us. A different respect for "authority" and whatnot. And you guys dont have guns typically. Whereas, in our nation, to own a gun is part of the fabric of being American. It's meant to be there so we can protect ourselves FROM OUR GOVERNMENT. I know for a fact that your media covers the political instability better than Americas so you should understand a bit of why its important what we as citizens are armed. You get to see way more of the actual footage and reporting of what has been going on during the protests. Maybe you dont tune into that stuff, but I know that when I was in England recently I saw stuff on the news that wasnt even on the American media websites let alone American newpapers or television.

New Orleans turned into a mess not because of guns. But because people could not protect themselves. And Japan is far from being restored. I dont know where you got that info. That 4th reactor is still melting down and they cant cap it off. Japans economy is at a net loss for the first time in decades. They are buying up oil and diesel to run that country at the moment at a rate they cannot sustain long term. Radiation levels are still dangerously high and people there are suffering, its just that we dont see it typically because Japan's media and government take the cake when it comes to hiding stuff for the "betterment of its people". Their "image" is more important than the truth. This wouldnt be the first time the Japanese have been dishonest, they have a history of it.

The world you and I get to see when we look out the window is very different than the world as it is PB. England wouldnt be England without its colonies, of which, Im not so sure we still arent one. We live off the backs of lessor nations and eventually it will be time to pay the piper. History proves that as a fact.

A truly civilized nation wouldnt have a military force that is currently stationed in so many different parts of the world that the sun never sets on our empire.

Whew, where do I start?

first off, I have to agree that you are increasingly having your freedoms (such as they are) reduced and usually in the name of safety/security. But even years ago I didn't think you were as "free" as your country's own hype implied. I needed to carry ID there if I wanted to use a credit card, write a check, drive a car or have a drink. Small things I know, but all indicative of a country that doesn't trust it's own citizens. And a bit of a shock to me.

Yes your news programs are appalling. When I was in the caribean last Feb, with only NY tv stations available, I got the impression that Whitney Houston's death was the only thing that had happened for the whole two weeks. Our TV is better but nowhere near perfect with lots of stuff going unreported.

Japan. No, I appreciate the nuclear thing isn't sorted - it will never be right again. I meant rather, that the housing and social side of things would be a prioritity for the government and Japanese people to regenerate.

Finally back to guns. What did the people of N.O. feel the need of protection from, if it wasn't other people with guns?

BTW I did live in the States for five years. 2 yrs in LA , 1 year over to Boston and then a further 2 years in LA before heading back here. And in all the time I was there I never saw one reason to own a gun but did see and hear of several reasons not to. I know the line "Guns don't kill people, people do" but even the NRA would have to admit that, in the hands of someone who wants to kill someone, a gun is one hell of an enabler!

I liked your borrowing of "the sun never sets" bitSmile but the world's first true world empire? not at all sure of that! The Romans pretty much controlled the entire world that they knew existed.

P.S. I don't think your country's going to collapse in a heap anytime soon. Don't buy Gold 'cos it seems from your countrymens responses a gun SHOP would be a better investment !!!!

Your first paragraph hits the nail on the head. Yes, all those little things may not seem like a lot, but they add up over time, and set a president for further social conditioning down the road. First you just need to carry an ID, next it will be illegal to not have a bar code tattoo'd on your wrist or some sort of chip installed.

Their's a lot of stuff that went down in N.O. that we dont know about.

I used the term "true" world empire because that is exactly what it is. Semantics I know. Youre right, the Romans did do it first.

I think your main point is that what the world needs, is an awakening. It needs love. We all need to put the guns down and get it together. Love for the planet and for each other. And buying guns and arming up is exactly the opposite of that. I realize that coming together is the solution. But in order to do that, there are a lot of bastards running things in the world that need to be beat down first. And stupid occupy protests arent going to do the trick when they got armies of storm troopers who will shit all over the constitution because their superiors gave them the order. Bringing picket signs to a gun fight is a sure way to get slaughtered.

Sure, it just looks like a bunch of hippies who want everything for free. But what is to be said about the gunmen who got exposed by Wikileaks in the Baghdad airstrikes? They werent just killing lowly hippies. They were shooting innocent civilians. And they tried to cover it up. How much more of that crap goes on? We cannot trust our worlds authorities when we have soldiers that are plucked from societies that do not encourage free thought and will. In dire times, these militaries will turn on their own people. Whether it be local police, anti-riot squads, or the actual military. They are only there to protect corporate interests. Need I remind everyone of this?

The fact that this happened in our own country, "the land of the free", just shows what a sick joke it all is.

Arming ourselves for this impending showdown is the only logical thing to do for most because they cannot fathom simply not paying their taxes and pulling their money out of the banks and really fucking the matrix up.

Im a firm believer in responsible gun ownership. And yeah, guns arent the problem, its the person behind the trigger. Youre definitely right there.

Stocking up on guns and ammo seems much more logical than gold. Shitty thing is, all civilian ammo is designed to have a shelf life these days (I wonder why? haha). So if a revolution is imminent, it better be done in a timely fashion.

Not so sure the end is near? Looks like the zombie apocalypse has begun preliminary testing...

That was meant to be a joke. But that is how it starts.

Buying farm land seems smart, but again, a large weapons stash would still be needed. If worst comes to worst, the government will just comandeer anything we think we own. It's been done plenty of times before. Just ask India.

There is nothing more dangerous than good intentions.

Look at Britain. 1.5 million people were killed for freedom in 2 world wars and you can't openly say what you think in case people are offended, a good intention gone horribly wrong, the country is a complete joke.

Yep...lead is more valuable than gold during the Armageddon.

Funny, but that gold dealer sold 4 million dollars worth last week? And what did these people pay him with? Paper dollars.

You should definitely be protecting your money right now...shit could get a lot worse, but not a collapse IMO. But if you believe in the collapse, nobody gives a shit about gold. Food, water, clothes, ammo, guns, etc.

If you were a prepper with 20 years worth of food stock piled, would you trade any of your food for a bar of gold? Hell no. Somebody better come down the road with a goat if they want to barter.

Im not banking on all hell breaking loose. It will in certain pockets of the world. But for the most part I wouldnt expect it universally.

Im not betting on the status quo either. Like oldfart says, all ponzi schemes fail. 15 years ago in highschool I got thrown out of economics class for going on a rant when I hypothesized that our countries economic system was a ponzi scheme. I hadnt done enough research to support my claims but it was just the general feeling I got when learning the subject. Something never sat right then, and today, thanks to the instant research available on the internet, its obvious that my intuition was correct.

I ended up placing in the top 5% in the country in economics later that year via some standardized test. I really enjoyed the subject matter.

Back on topic.... I dont think it will be either of the extreme ends of the spectrum (total anarchy or continued ponzi scheme). I think there will be some significant unrest and instability though. That is certain IMO.
