I used to go up there a long time ago. Loved it. I actually Saw a guy die up there though, and have always wanted to know the poor guys name. Other then that, it was a very fun track, with nothing scary. Is it sill around?

They have toned the track down at Mammoth Bar quite a bit - there were way too many injuries taking place. The track as it is right now is VERY tight with straightaways less than 20 - 30 yards. Low speeds have equalled fewer injuries. It is a great track for the minis! They have put some $$ in to that place, lots of gazeebos, picnic tables, a kids track (110cc or less) and all the trails are marked. They do water the track regularly - the soil there is awesome!

Not sure if this is the same death/accident you mentioned seeing, but I was racing 125 int. in 1983 [or 84] and saw a kid about 14 yrs old in the 125 jr class unfortunately crash and pass away. I was standing about 40' away from were he went down. It was the 2nd or 3rd corner, and was the first lap. He was towards the back of the field, and was entering a very slow/tight corner. All the riders were stacked up single file in 1st gear, most with the clutch in, it was that slow. This poor kid looked like he got on the front brake a little to hard, kinked the front end and kind of went over the bars/side of the bike. The bike was just about at a stand still when he went over. Was absolutely the slowest get off I had ever seen. Paramedics were there quickly and were frantically trying to get him to breath. They had what looked like an oxygen mask attached to a bag and were trying to force air into his lungs. Didn't look like it was working very well, looked more like his stomach was rising than his chest when they would squeeze the bag. Not sure if this is possible, but that is what it looked like to me. From the second he hit the ground, he never moved. Not even a finger. I was about the 4th or 5th person to get to him, but just kind of stepped aside to give the paramedics more room when they got there. Was the most helpless feeling I ever had.
A few months later I was at a grocery store in Carmichael [approx. 60 mi from Mammoth Bar], and when the checker seen my copy of MXA, she asked if I raced. When I replied yes she asked if I was at the Mammoth bar race when a rider had passed. She went on to tell me that she knew the rider and family, and that the Dad wasn't really to excited that his son was racing, but his son kept after him until he let him race. She also said that on the line just prior to the start, Dad had wished him luck and was starting to walk away, when his son reached out and grabbed his arm, and told him that he loved racing motorcycles more than anything, and was very thankful that he was allowing him to race. She said that this was something that his son had never done before.

WOW. What a story.

no man, wasnt the same time. This was 99- 01 somewhere in there and this was a man. Probably 30 years old. His name was Dave. Something different about him, he had a question mark for a number. His front number plate was a big question mark.
This story is a little brutal so dont read it if you dont want to.
I was at the little kid track on my 80 with a buddy, having the time of my life. Riding so fast on that little thing. Then we ran outa gas and as we push our bikes back to the truck, I see my dad yell my name to get over there as fast as I could.
I guess just before my bike ran out of gas, My dad was over towards the entrance, and this was when there were three tables going back to where you would enter/exit the track, and Huge berm that took you 180 degrees towards the rest of the track, followed. Well, my dad saw the whole thing. He thought the guys throttle may of stuck and when he went off the last table, he was flying and right at the take off his arms came off the bars and his body did a slow rotating back flip and landed right on his head. (im talkin, from the table face, to where he landed- 30 to 40 feet away)

My dad was the very first person to run over there, and the sight that he saw....
He had to turn away.
He just saw a massive build up of blood, and just, everything, coming out of his helmet. He had to turn away. Ofcourse there were guys behind him coming up to see the guy.
So by the time I got there, there were about 15 riders standing around him with two riders working on the guy. One guy was just trying to keep his blood in that was coming out of his mouth. Finally, the paramedics show up, and for another 20 min, work on the guy. I saw things that were just crazy. Pullin pieces of bone out of mouth that had come up. Poop. everything. The only talking going on was his buddy, just kept saying every 20 seconds, "come on Dave!" Finally I heard a medic say to the mans buddy, "I dont think hes gonna make it" and a little bit later, they stopped. Rolled out the yellow cover. He just layed there on the track for the longest time until the chopper could fly in. Everybody just walked back to there trucks, went over to the guys buddies and said they were sorry ect. and EVERYONE went on home..

I have always wanted to know who that guy was. It was just unbelievable.

The guys name was Dave Simonson. He was a good buddy of a friend of mine and he still has a Question mark number plate hanging up in his moto trailer. Tragic.

I lived at the top of the hill on the Auburn side, used to ride there in the 80's a lot. Also ran Placer Co Sheriff's through SVIA courses down there for their ATV certifications.

More than one party got broken up down there on a Saturday night. Good times riding a wheelie past the sheriff's as they headed down to bust the four wheeled miscreants. Funny teaching them just a few years later .... huh...
