Calling Ryan Dungey "slow and steady" at Motocross is abit... uniformed! Or by someone who's lacking real life observational skills! Even James said, to Steve on the show, that RD has beat RV more times than the inverse!

This is Dungey's third year, he had the most wins/overalls in 2010 AND was tied in overalls with RV, only because of mechanical at Freestone, in 2011. The 2011 individual win ratio was 10 - 6 however in RV's favor.

I think RD lacks some "aggressive early passing" ability more than speed. At the 'Wick with no bike for almost an entire lap, man... what a charge he put on there! Slow and steady my ass Wink

Would have been a good article if Dungey wasn't referred to as a slow tortoise. That is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard a top MX racer be called.

Obviously Dungey is one of the best riders in the the class and on this planet, I was simply using the Tortoise metaphor because of his consistency, his determination, and his level head. He doesn't make many mistakes and he always keeps pushing forward. And yes, alot of the time he is straight up faster than other guys in the fast five, but still the personification of him will always revolve around the things I stated above. Believe me I wasn't trying to bash the guy, nothing but the upmost respect for him.

Are really struggling to see that the comparison? He isn't saying he is slow, it's a metaphor based on a saying that he clearly states at the top of the article...

Dungey is definitey more of a steady rider than Stewart... Do you ever watch Dunge and think fuck he's pushing it?!?! Or Stewart and say wow that was calm? Is it that hard to get... It's a good story/point and it will be interesting cause I'd bet if Stewie does ok he'll have more wins and some bad races like every title he's entered and RD will always always b there...

Seriously, one of the dumbest things I have ever read.

That was such a poor article.

That was a good article in a way that it linked their persona's on the bike more than their actually speed. Dungey took on the Hare persona last year when his bike wouldn't start. That was RAW speed and riding to the limit.

Anyway,

Dungey very fast, smooth, consistent. You know he has the speed to run up front with anyone, can grind out results and has stamina to run hard for 2 rough motos. Doesn't have the killer instinct to make passes or improve track position quickly. He is methodical in the way he attacks a track and passes riders in front.

Stewart very fast, stylish, erratic. You know he has the speed to run up front with anyone, can dig deep and pass at will, stamina is in question and his ability to concentrate has always been in doubt with the random crazy crashes he has had over the last 9/10 years. Attacks a track like no other and can pass anyone almost anywhere he wants.

Carmichael (not mentioned on the pulp list for obvious reasons) was the best motocross machine ever born. Has the best of both traits out of these 2 riders.

Villopoto is a close second in my opinion, he has the raw ability of Stewart with the fitness and desire of a Carmichael. But that RAW speed catches him sometimes.

Reed is mister consistent and is fit, fast and can turn it up. But again it bites him every now and again.

Trey is very similar to Reed.

If looking over the last 8 years outdoors I would say the list should be as follows.

Perfect Motocross Rider vs Potentially perfect

1. Carmichael 2. Villopoto 3 Dungey /Reed tied 5 Stewart

Why Stewart at the back. He has proved he can go undefeated but not against any of the other top elite riders. But potentially if he gets fit enough, gels with the bike and screws his head on enough to concentrate for 2 hard motos then he is capable of becoming a Carmichael. So is Villopoto.

Dungey just needs to find that little bit more fire and he is up there. Reed has shown it outdoors several times in his career but never beating the big guys when faced with them over a whole season.
