Some buddies and I were talking about our favorite sports stories the other day (they're not mx guys) and I was trying to think of all the cool racing moments that I have witnessed.

What really came to mind was Washougal, maybe 2002? It was the year Mike Brown and Ryan Hughes got together at the bottom of horsepower hill...

Anyway, in practice that weekend, Bubba (on a 125) was coming out of the S-turns with one hand on the bars, scrubbing off the face of the next jump, and giving hi-5's to the people on the side of the track (my dad and I). That was really the moment that I realized the true athletic ability level of the pros.

So what was the moment that really dragged you into the sport, hook-line-and sinker? Pics/video a major plus.

For me was the first time my brother in law took me out riding in the woods. I was on my cousin's 2001 KX250 and I had a blast. It rained and it was a muddy mess and somehow, with my limited dirtbike skills, I was one of the few that managed to stay on the bike all day. Some of these guys were pretty good riders but I guess they didn't like mud. Call it begginers luck or natural talent, that day I knew I was hooked!

Besides my own riding experiences as a kid, the pro visuals I will always remember are in 1976, Don Kudalski doing one hand wheelies during practice at Hyatt Cycle Park and Jimmy Weinert doing no hand jumps at Daytona during the race.

knew i loved riding after launching my 01 cr250 off this huge step down double..it felt like flying and even though i landed smooth it was a HARD landing.

thats what makes me appreciate pro riders....those big jumps still hurt even if you land smooth!!

Another one was watching Danny Smith rip around one of our old tracks. I'd never seen anyone but local guys ride there. That guy could freakin rip

1. Brad Lackey pitching his RM465 speedway style at the bottom of the Orchard Hill, Farleigh Castle 1982,
He was flat out in 3rd gear,
he then double singled to get to the top, it was the smoothest I have ever seen it done.

2. Danny Magoo Jumping his KTM out of the bomb hole ( remember them ) at Walkes Colne England 1988 ??,
He jumped so high and far he looked sideways to the commentary tower, he was level with it,
He then proceeded to land past the next corner on a downslope, he created his own double,
It was almost a 100 feet further than anyone had ever done.

British Mx dragged itself up from its Island origins at that moment,

I shook his hand as well in between races,
Americans and attack style Mx became very real that day.

I always knew the pros hauled but you never have a true reference point for them if you've never rode a Sx/Mx track as the same time as them. When they show up at an open practice day at your local track, it all becomes clear.

In 2004/2005 (I think), I went to a Wednesday open practice at Piru Mx Park. Damon Huffman was there on a Honda (I can't remember the team). There was a section coming into the back canyon that was double-double-double-table-90ft uphill double. Well, that was the rhythm I was doing because triples scared the crap out of me and the lane wasn't really made to be that way. Huffman would quad into that thing. That blew me away instantly. I mean, Huffman is no slouch, but he was barely making the night show at Sx and the Top 15 in Mx that year. It was just unreal fast.

It would be scary as shit to be riding your home track and have a Top 5 all-time guy (Carmichael, Stewart, Reed, Dungey, Villopoto) come blowing by you. It would really put it into perspective.

The time Ezra Lusk jumped into my practice session on Amateur day at Washougal.

I was one of the last to leave the line and about halfway through my first lap I heard this 125 just screaming behind me and thought that, no way was somebody lapping me already in practice. I saw his name on the jersey and for a few brief moments gave chase through a series of switchbacks after the finish line. He was yarding me by half a straight through every corner. I tried to stick with him for about 4 or 5 corners and finally came to my senses.

Pat Richter throwing his Husky to the locks so far sideways that the front wheel would hop going into turn one on our speedway track. How he kept it up still baffles me.
And then I went to watch him ricochet around a MX track.
