New to motocross...250 or 450?

Edited Date/Time 5/10/2012 5:02pm
Hi, I'm looking to buy a motocross. I'm 33 year old, Did a bit of supermoto with a drz400SM & my Hypermotard and previously I was doing track with ATV Banshee & raptor. Doing also mountain snowmobile during the winter

I definatly like performance since for all the machine that I had I invested a lot to modified them...

I'm 6'4'' 235lbs
I'm planning on doing maybe 50/50 track Vs trail/woodroads and my experience in motocross is quite limited.

Knowing this, should I buy a WR450, CRF450X, RMZ450/250, CRF450/250, YZF250/450, ...??? I'm affraid to be bored quite fast with a 250 and be limited in the trails but at the same time don't want to buy a 450 and be afraid of it and using it at only 50% of the capacity...maybe a WR or a X but the extra weight??? I'm all mixed up...

Thanks

At 235 lbs., the 450F torque will be handy.

I do the same type of riding you do, with trail/desert riding taking more and more of the lead as I get older, and I've always owned motocross bikes.

The MX bike is obviously the best thing for the track, and it's nimble on the trails, but the range sucks.

I've been looking around lately, and have decided the best of both worlds (for me) is the KTM 300XC.

Go check one out.

Well, I think a 250 would generally be better for someone starting off but since you already have other sorts of various riding experience, maybe a 450 won't be so challenging for you.

I would recommend an RMZ450, but I ride Suzuki so I'm biased ;P

I agree with geezer although I own a KTM. A MX bike's suspension will be harsh on the little bumps in the woods. An Enduro bike like mine will be soft on the track. An XC offers a pretty good option and other advantages.

Go for the 450! You dont need to use all the power, but its there for you! I think you will "outgrow" the 250 very quickly. IMO

Ok it's a done deal! I just bought a 2012 YZ450F white! I decided to go with the Yamaha since the dealer here is awesome and the reliability of the Yam is really good.

I just tested the bike this weekend and it's pushing really well (with the yosh pipe) ...;-)

Unfotunatly for me motocross is far from being the same as quad on a track...It's bad to be so bad but I guess that a really soft sand track not really well maintained is not the easiest way to learn motocross...

Anyways I'm planning on taking a trainning to give be basic techniques and avoid getting to much bad habit's by learning by myself...

Is there any good DVD teaching motocross techniques?

Thanks

you're too big for a 250 if you're 6'4 and 235 pounds...
