85 or 125

My son needs to move up from a pw80 he is a bit over 5 foot and he is nearly 14. He wants to get a yz125 2004 but I dont know he would be able to handle it. He reckons he can so and opinions would be good.

He rides the pw80 nearly to death and nearly broke the suspension going over one of his homemade jumps he made with the tractor.

Has he sat on a 125. Can he touch on it ? , Would he be able to pick it up and start it when he tips over.

If he is barely over five foot , it seems he is a touch small but if he can do the above I would go wiith the 125 cause he will grow quick at that age.

I have a daughter 14 and she rides a YZ125 but is 5' 6"

The 125 is tall..check online but iam pretty sure the seat is higher then both the 250 and 450 by like 1/2 inch...tall and skinny..just like i like my women..Tongue

wait..or was that short and fat...anyway..

If it was my choice, I'd go with a 125 and if it's a little too tall, have the suspension lowered and inch or two. Any good suspension shop can do it fairly inexpensively and it's reversable for whenever he gets a bit taller.

The problem with an 85 is he'll be ready for something bigger within a year or so. It's easier and cheaper to go ahead and put him on a 125 and shorten the suspension than to buy an 85 this year and a 125 next year.

Go with a Kx 100 for now. I am a firm believer in keeping kids on the small bikes as long as you can while introducing big bikes slowly. You bring him on a 125 and he is not ready it will not be fun for him and he will stop with the sport all together. You get him on a bike he is confident he will get faster and continue to love the sport!
