Not sure if their was any offcial designation by the factorys. It could just be an English translation abbreviation. Unsure

Honda = RC, though at first they had Type 1, Type 2
Yamaha = OW, OW27, OW38, OW40, etc.
Kaw = SR
Suzuki = RN for open, RH for 250 and RA for 125

Yes, true and corny for the SR.

Suzuki works bikes would have a pattern of RN71 for the open 1971 model, RH71 for the 250..

In 72 they would be RN72, RH72, etc.
