Vital should enable mouseover preview function which allows you to preview the first lines of the post on mouseover without having to click on it. This would prevent clicking on the " You Know Who Did......." post only to find out once again to find out four strokes suck and have ruined the sport.
I realize the previous sentence will likely derail this entire thread.........

Could not agree more. I love Vital, but out of the many forums I am a member of, this one is far behind the rest. It needs an update badly.

You did have a perfect example of a how-not-to for subject lines. Wink

In a perfect world we could jump on every idea immediately. I've seen the feature he described on other boards and it's okay. But there are other things (sidewide) that are taking priority at the moment. If people did take a little more care in how they craft their subject lines, that would get 75% of the way there.

We've also boosted the size of the Vital MX staff (we've added a new person who'll be working more on product testing/reviews), and just finished up a adding a much more robust experience on photo/article comments. We're always tinkering on something new. There's no "done" when it comes to web sites. Smile

Oh, I understand completely. I'm a software developer, remember? That's the burden you get saddled with when you roll your own from scratch as opposed to starting with someone else's more feature-rich, albeit imperfectly fitting, framework. Little leveraging someone else's sweat equity.

Yep. I recently installed a new phpbb forum for our tech guys to play with on a different domain. It still has my favorite set of features for both the users and admins, though it doesn't have that mouseover feature that the OP mentioned.

Well, I'm not sure which you're playing with, but in most of those open source efforts, if it doesn't have something in the core SVN, some enterprising user will build a mod that can be patched in. That's teh advantage. The disadvantage is usually the exhausting effort to wire the ill-fitting part seamlessly into your overall VitalSite framework. Been there, done that. It ain't easy.

It can be easily added as a mod. I love phpbb.

Ditto on that.. I have a few sites with integrated phpBB boards. Some use phpBB's user tables to control sessions, some use a custom user table that phpBB hooks into. The latter is actually easier in the amount of code needed. But the ability to integrate phpbb's user sessions across the site is handy.

Do you have a way of looking at the numbers of the people who actually use the home page vs the forum?

I know unless I'm directed there by someone on the mesage board, I never go to it.

Personally, I'd rather hear about new products and testing by the board members, not someone who is getting a product for free and is being paid to write a review. With the way news travels now, I don't think many people are taking a "paid tester" opinion all that seriously anymore. Just what I've noticed from another non moto sport site I go to.

Yes, we have dozens of ways to crunch the numbers. And you're missing out by not going to the homepage.

One of the things that I think you'll see our new guy working on is having Vital MX members helping out with testing.

Just my opinion, but thats the way to go about it, get some users involved. One guy doing reviews is a good deal for that guy, but reviews are a numbers game for the most part. I mean look at Meg's boyfriend, and his review of the MX Alive game. laughing.. The more people who review any product the better it is for the consumer.

I should check the homepage more often, but time is limited and I figure if something is popping on the homepage it gets brought up here as well.

It seems that most other forums share the same basic format, which seems to work well. A couple more gripes are the quoting, and the search function. It would be nice if there was a multi-quote tool, and if you didn't have to quote an entire post, just parts if you wanted. An advanced search function would be nice too.

Again, I love the website, just offering constructive criticism.

A lot of other forums use vBulletin forum software and then customize it. This is why many of those forums have similar functionality. I believe Thumpertalk is now using IP.Board, which is pretty slick. phpBB is ok. It's free, but just ok. Requires a lot of work to customize.

If there's one feature I wish Vital had, it's a small icon showing which threads you've contributed to and a link directly to the page where you contributed in the thread. It makes it easier to pick up where you left off in a conversation, although I guess you can argue many Vital threads quickly devolve from conversation into loud noise and bickering. Maybe cause and effect?

We actually need to make that happen for a day.

I really, REALLY want to know why they don't have this feature on Youtube. Really. Just have the dislike bar visible on the video thumbnail. Why not? I'm almost SURE they used to have that feature and removed it, but I could be remembering wrong.

It's not a huge deal on Vital. You can click back no problem. The thread will be buried in a day anyway. But if someone labels their Youtube video "triple backflip" and the video is a guy doing three backflips in a row (for example), a quick glance at the dislike bar BEFORE you click means you won't be giving Fuckface any undeserved hits (potentially millions of them), plus any money he might be making by deceiving people.

There's probably a Flag Video button for this shit, but it obviously it's not the cure.

Now I've upset myself.
