Why is so important to get people to follow you? I've noticed the top 4(JS, CR, RD, RV) are trying to get their following numbers up.

James 101K
Chad 91K
Dungey 60K
Villopoto 50K

or is this just a popularity contest?

Some ppl can make cash of tweets, in the form of product plugs. I guess they may also use it to boost their exposure for their sponsors or to get new sponsors.

Twitter is just one link (an important one) in the overall marketing plan of most businesses these days. I'm not sure if it's considered as a marketing tool by any of the moto guys right now, but if it's not, it should be.

I just started looking at twitter over the weekend,what a weekend to start.
Riders and their wives going back and forth with one another and their mechanics attempting to intervene.
