Why? The R and X are basically the same, just have a local suspension shop set up the forks and shock for your weight. The x will already be set up with the wire harness, battery, etc for elec start. If you need more power you can swap the cam and exhaust from a R. Also if you unhook the pink wire to the CDI box on the X it will change the rev limit and give it a little more pep.

I'm betting he's wanting to go from valve muncher to pinger power.

Finally realized that a CRF230 is not going to work for you anymore I see.

Just buy a CRF250x and take off the lights and get a revalve. There is not much difference between the R and X aside from what has already been stated in this thread.

well...

i wouldn't go that far. the 230 does the job at the moment but as i everyone has said and i have not disagreed with, the proper chassis will be the ultimate answer. having done a fair bit of research now i sort of have a plan to get the best chassis and the precise motor i want and the electric start WHICH all you tough and eat nails for breakfast guys think is just a pussy thing for old people but the fact is that it is a huge help. anyone notice that the new KTM 450 is electric start ? at anyrate... i see the 250 R chassis with the 250x drive line as the answer for the next step and then after that i can put the 250 R top end on for the extra power if i ever get that far. one thing at a time. ya know you laugh about the electric start... i crashed the other day ... flew it head long into a berm ... the bike went over the top into the woods and i hit the berm hard. so i'm sitting there wondering if i have any collarbones left and this really good, top flight guy on a 250 stops to help me. he pulls the bike out of the woods and i'm starting o be able to move and we all laugh about it and after a few minutes we are going to head off. i hit the button, bike starts and i wait for him to get going.... he kicks and he kicks and he kicks and that goes on until i think i'm going to have to take HIM to the hospital.... and he is 27 years old in fabulous shape...

it all electric for me...

No one is going to knock on you for wanting electric start if you're a beginner.

There is no difference between the 2009 and older 250R and 250X chassis. They share the exactly the same frame and components. The only difference is the easily accessed airbox, exhaust, cam profile, suspension valving, lights, CDI, and of course the electric start. You will be wasting your time and money trying to find a person with a 250r roller and then another person with a 250x motor. Especially when you start thinking about shipping costs from the United States to you. Unless you're a doctor or a drug dealer it makes no sense to spend that coin.

Buy a complete 250x and do a few simple mods and you will basically have a slightly toned down 250r.

really ?
everything i have read says the X is considerably heavier... 50 lbs or so and the suspension isn't anything like the R... not saying youre wrong... just trying to establish whats correct.

apparently the motors blow up with some regularity on the R's there are rollers all over the place... 06's and 7 for 1000$ or so and X motors complete from 600 on up. just a concept but i have seen a thread elsewhere where it was done quite simply.

Why not just buy a KTM with electric start? The factories are building amazing, reliable bikes that are perfect for whatever type of riding you prefer. Dollar wise you'll save in the long run because flipping motors and suspension etc ALWAYS ends up being a nightmare and a money pit. It's a no brainer.

two reasons... the ktm is a 450 and almost $ 8000 and the conversion i'm talking about has been done already. its simple and easy. having said that, i totally agree with the notion of buying factory first if possible.

Mr. steve, no disrespect meant but you are way over thinking this. As mentioned, the R and X are basically the same. The difference in weight is from the battery, starter, headlight,etc.. Just find a good X and have a local shop help you set the suspension and you are good to go. Then as stated above, as you gain confidence you can easily swap a few things to get a little more power such as some aftermarket exhaust or cheaper yet, find a good stock R exhaust on ebay.

I did a X a few yers ago for my cousin. He liked the E start but at 6' 5 and 200 plus, he wanted a little more pep. We bought a complete good stock R exhaust on ebay for $80, put in a new Hot Cam, opened up the airbox, re-jetted the carb, and cut the pink wire, seems like we changed the sprocket size too but not sure on that. It made it run like a different bike.

Pretty sure the X has a wider tranny ratio than the R also. In stock form its pretty mellow but is a little more than your 230. The biggest difference you will notice is the better suspension. That alone will make you more confident and be safer.
