I would always prefer to buy American if the product is of comparable value. I would even pay a little more for "Made in America".
Yeah thanks.

How competitive is this bike?

If it was a well built bike and competitive w/ the Japanese/European bikes, then yes.

Yes but people are patriotic until there's money involved. It;s funny how people will come into our store and say they want something made in the US. Then they see a import item for less money and suddenly it really doesn't matter!

In all cerealousness, if the situation mimicked that of the auto industry (Where GM, Ford, etc. compete in quality, price, .etc with Toyota, Subaru, etc.) I'd for sure buy a U.S. product.

Same price means nothing. Better performance means everything. No way would I buy a US made motocross bike. Or anything 100% US made for that matter unless there is no alternative. I love my 100% made in china levi strauss jeans. There is nothing american about living in america. Does China have a national anthem? Time to bust it out at this years super bowl. Maybe the government will wake up and ban imports from other countries so there are jobs for US citizens. If we start now in 20 years we might be able to produce a bike better than a Hodaka Super Rat.

Not right away. I'd want to get a track record, especially for the engine.
Also for suspension I'd want to get something that tuners understand. The worst thing would be to get stuck with a one of a kind bike with parts that are impossible to get, and who nobody knows how to tune.
Actually, now that I think about it. For something that hasn't really been done successfully before, like an electric bike, then yes, I would. Everybody is starting from scratch on this one.

No ^ not me. But people will, and instead of bragging how cheap the flight was, they'd brag about how much they paid for it.

My answer to the original question: eventually yes, but We'd have to overcome the fact we would still require foreign suppliers

Depends on what they made.
Simple, light, with good power and priced about what Nippon costs, hell yea I'd buy USA.

About the Harley's.
They ain't got time to screw around with a few thousand units for a fringe group of guys.
They're into making money.

I would buy a Japanese bike if it were manufactured in the USA.

I'd get an American bike if it were manufactured in Mexico.

I will buy whatever is the best for the money I spend. Thats why I drive toyotas, and rode Yamaha 2 stroke MX bikes. I wont buy an inferior product just because its a US company.
10/21/2011 8:39pm
I would pay the same or 500-1000 more for an American made bike over a japanesse bike of the same quality.

I wouldn't take an American made bike of lesser quality that saved me 500 bucks... let alone cost me more. 1 Cannondale was enough.

Fine, the bike (if the big 4 were at 100%) would be an 85%. Does that make sense?
So the American bike would be a 380 or so?

No, like performance comparing.
Would this mean..........

1.) If I hammered down on that sucker.... would it carry me only 85'.....when my friends Jap bike carried him the full 100'?

2.) OR possibly.....If I decided to huck a huge triple......but only cleared it 85% of the way , while my friend and his Jap bike cleared it perfectly?

3.) Because my friends Jap bike was 15% faster than mine.....does this mean he'll score with chicks that are 15% better than the ones I ended up with?

4.) Will my parts cost only 85% of what my friends pays for his Jap bike parts?

I just wanna get my facts strait here before I answer this question. I'm about 85% sure I would buy an American made bike. I am 100% positive that I already bought a Jap bike however.
10/21/2011 9:01pm
He means performance Jeffro. So the Japanese bikes would do 15% better wheelies.

Harley could never make an airplane.

The Epa would ground them because of the leaking oil trail.
