So I've raced motocross for almost 10 years, although the last three years I've been off the bike due to a shoulder injury. Since I was 14 my left shoulder would sublux on occasion, but I had never fully dislocated it. I never really let it bother me until I was 18 and had a pretty bad wreck where I was air lifted and spent a few days in the hospital. I had some pain from my left shoulder so I got a MRI and it showed that I had a torn labrum. I tried to ride without getting surgery and it was fine, until I fell on it again. So I decided to get surgery to repair a bankart lesion. The surgery went good and I did the therapy after surgery. I returned riding and racing after 6 months. I didn't do much of the therapy exercises after that just regular weight training and cardio. I was able to race for about a year with no issues then I swapped and almost wrecked but saved it and right at the end of that my shoulder popped out with out falling. So after that I dislocated it once more while riding then seven times doing random things like sleeping. I have full range of motion, no pain, full strength I can do push up claps, pull ups, bench a little over my body weight, swim, ride or anything I want, but if I have a quick reaction or fall where my arm is above my head it will most likely come out. I have also dislocated my right shoulder once and my right elbow once. My ortho says that I'm double jointed but it still hurts when I dislocate my shoulder. After the first three dislocation I learned how to relocate my shoulder on my own. My ortho said that he could do a procedure call the bristow procedure but if I dislocated it I would have to go to the hospital. Recently I have started doing all of the therapy exercises again to try and strengthen the rotator cuff muscles with 3-5 lbs weight. I was just curious if anyone else has had a shoulder issue riding and what they did.
Last winter playing basketball he had his first dislocation. MRI showed only minor tear. No surgery. Took time off. Came back it dislocated a couple more times. Ok lets do surgery for a torn labrum. It was worse than what they thought. Anyway time off, therapy. All was good. and then...
A few races in a well known A class rider from GA, who just ran top 5 at LL, made a pretty bad decision. Jumped from left crossed over and land on the right side. Yep. He landed on my son, whose shoulder dislocated in the crash.
So much for that $28,000 surgery, and his whole year.
Took time off more excersises. Tried to come back but it was dislocating alot. Not riding but sleeping, pulling belt out of pants. He'd just put it back in.
I took him to a shoulder specialist. Paid $2900 for a MRI with dye. They could not read it due to anchors from the previous operation and a plate on the collarbone. Dr. says open surgery.
Come to find out the labrum was torn completely from the bone. Dr. said he could pop his shoulder out with three fingers while he was knocked out. But they could not see it on the MRI??
The Dr. waited until he got in to make a decision on the bristow procedure. He decided it was not neccesary to cut and move bone around. Anyway my son has been doing therapy for almost six months this time and hopes to be riding soon. It does seem much better this go round with the aggressive therapy.
So I don't have an answer but it could be damaged again or never really fixed right to begin with. Riding and popping out could get youself hurt worse. If you can go for another surgery it might be your best bet. Find a guy that specializes in shoulders and look into his background some.
Good luck!
