I was with the FLVMX bunch racing vintage and modern so to get the show in by 4:30-5:00 the races were mostly 5 lap motos (10-12 mins). The classes went from peewee, vintage classes A and B, evo 1 thru 4 A and B, modern A thru C and women. When the economy was better there were usually 85-100+ riders. I would say the majority of the riders racing one class wanted more track time. Most are Vets and race 2 or more classes. The turnout dictates how long the motos are. Now that less people are making all the races the practices are longer as well as the races and everyone`s happy. Personally, I think 10 mins is a little short. 15-20 would be good for me but for the youngsters and all the go fast guys that can ride all day 20-30 mins. sounds good. I like Daves plan. Reminds me of my days at the Sports Stadium and Bithlo when it first opened.

My opinion,

Some of you guys vastly overestimate the number of riders that really want to run more than a 12 minute moto.
.
Most that want to run more than that are at Millsaps or some other training facility all the time instead of at local tracks because there is not much competition for them, and they really do not have that much interest in smoking the locals by 30-45 seconds.

I also don't understand why a track would plan on a 30 minute intermission on a regular basis. Get a relief flagger to go around duringf the day, position your equipment for quick and specific track work as needed, and keep it rolling.

I wish you well in your planning but would strongly suggest that you find a local race and get involved in helping before you mortgage the house to go into the racing biz.

I seriously doubt You have any realistic idea what you are in for.

There are reasons that there is a lot of churn in race promoting, and "doing it because you love the sport" will protect you from the realities about as much as a plastic poncho will help you in a gun fight.

JustMX,

Thanks for your input.

Yeah, I've spent plenty of time at local and national races through the years.

I don't plan to re-write the sport, but would like to cover costs.

I'd like for riders and families to enjoy the experiences I had when I was racing every weekend.

You're right, many riders think they want longer races when they really don't know what they are asking for.

I'm in the development stage and I'll be looking for more input on here as well as at the local tracks.

I don't want to compete with the local tracks, but I'd like to see them coordinate schedules so each can reap some benefit of their time and efforts.
