Yes, the DG stuff is garbage. The stock pipe is best so if yours is in good shape, I wouldn't replace it. They are prone to cracking but that can easily be solved by replacing the pipe/silencer spring with a bicycle seatpost clamp and doubling up the springs at the exhaust manifold.

I would just repack the stock silencer or buy a new OEM silencer if the rest of the exhaust is in good shape.

The only way to go with a replacement pipe is with JEMCO. Hand-made cone section. I have one on my bike. They are ~$215 or so, about what DG costs. DG's quality control has just been absolute junk for about 10 years now-- they are the Maier plastic of vintage pipes.

JEMCO is made right here in Houston. Jon is older, I can't imagine that he's going to be doing this too much longer. So over time his pipes should only appreciate, PLUS it's better than either the stocker or DG.

Thanks Cam - i'm going to give the stock pipe a shot, it's been rewelded in the past with this ugly patch but so what, fresh coat of paint should be ok. Only cost would be the replacement silencer

barkhard - thanks - just curious...how do you think jemco compares to the stocker in terms of affects on the powerband? i'd hate to lose that '82 top end screammmm!

You really should talk to Marc Shade at FullFloater. He's the guy who built my 81 RM125 with 43mm forks and my 82 RM250-- and he turned me onto JEMCO. My understanding is that the top end stays the same with a slightly mellower mid. Whereas, DG: 1) never fits; 2) truncates the top.

Hey Cam - which seatpost clamp do you use on the pipe/silencer junction?

From memory, I believe it was a 34.9mm seatpost clamp like the one in the link below. There will be a small ridge inside that you will need to take out with a die grinder. I'll verify the size when I take the bike out of storage for the fall races. You can also measure the stinger on your silencer with a micrometer, then multiply the inch measurement by 25.4mm to get the metric size.

The stock silencer is better than any aftermarket option. It's longer, which provides the over-rev that the engine was designed around. Shorter silencers trade off top end for bottom.

Here's some pics of my restoration...it's only been 2yrs now in the making now as i only have a few hrs a week to devote to it but now that it's getting close i'm making more time. I'm going to need a new rear wheel as the hub worn and there is play in the bearings because of it..other than that i'm down to the plastics and cosmetics left

The bike looks great! I'm putting a new tire on the '83 next week so I should be able to get you some pics of the rear axle/spacers if you still need them.

Hey Cam... thanks to a lot of your help I think i've got it correct, but if you have a camera handy when you do the tire might be a good confirmation thanks.

Not yet , but I did get up in the attic and found that rear wheel. It's dirty but it looks good. I'll clean it up and take some pics. I hope to have time to work on the 83 this weekend.

CamP are you running a DLS on your bike and are the hubs the same as the SLS? I'm getting ready to upgrade a 79 RM250 to 43mm forks and DLS.

Yes, I'm running a complete front end, with the DLS brake, from a '84 RM250. The hub is smaller than the earlier SLS brakes so you won't be able to reuse any of your 79 front end parts if you want to upgrade to the DLS.

I think I recall reading that you can install the 43mm triple clamps on the 79/80 RM frame if you use your old steering stem.

I got info on the stem. My forks are from an 82, so I need a later wheel then? 84? Will the 82 axle work?

Are they '82 RM465 forks? They are the only '82 forks/wheel that will accept the DLS brake.

Yes they are, at least thats how they were listed on Ebay. I think the 82 250 still had the 38mm forks. Will any DLS wheel work do I have to be exacct on a wheel?

Actually, come to think of it, I don't think any RM's got the DLS until 83. You'll need a 83-84 wheel and brake, but I don't know if the DLS backing plate will work with the 82 465 fork leg. I know the lug is in a different location on the 38mm forks so the DLS won't work with them.

Hey Cam, this is off-topic, but any idea where I can source some of the .010" aluminum sheet you recommended as a spacer? I want to do the later model fork swap to my 01 500 and my 96 250; I've mocked it up on the 93 and it does make a difference (sorry for the post hi-jack).

I'm getting my 86 CR250, 81 RM250, 82 RM250 (the one with the Simons UDX) and 96 RMX250 down from MI tomorrow. I'm stoked!

We found a original PC aluminum s/f for the 86 and mounted it up, the bike is just beautiful. I'll try to get some pics soon... SUPER excited to be getting my bikes back from

Man, I hope I didn't jump the gun on these forks.

Some hobby shops have it. You can get it online HERE

You can also use a double layer of beer can. They are .005" thick.

Congrats on getting your bikes back. Like Christmas in October!

BTW, I raced the 95 CR for the first time last weekend in the TVRC's Decade class. That old bike is fast. Pulled holeshots on a couple of late model YZ450's that snuck into the class. The CRF450 forks worked great. all I did was reduce the outer chamber oil volume to 375cc. The 95 shock was too soft, even with the 5.6kg rear spring, so I had to run the compression adjuster all the way in. Revalved it yesterday by adding three 40 x .20 shims to the low speed compression stack. Hopefully that'll balance it out.

Take a pic of your left fork leg brake boss and I'll be able to tell you if the DLS brake will work.
