ok camera nerds. Im looking for a camera thats not very expensive that I can build on as I get better over time. Canon, Nikon? What the hell is a SLR? Again, this is just for family, etc so I dont need the hubble lens or anything. Thoughts?

SLR = Single Lense Reflex
Basically it means that what you are looking at through the viewfinder is actually what you will be taking a pic of...you are looking through a "Single Lense"

Nikon D3000 is a great starter DSLR, they just updated it to a D3100, so if most of the 3000's you can pick up for pretty cheap. You can use it in Auto and it will take great pics, and when you feeling brave, switch that baby to manual and go for it!!

It's really going to depend on your budget, so how much do you have to spend? Nikon and Canon both have their positives/negatives, so it's kind of a draw. I personally shoot Canon and would recommend finding a used Canon 40D in the $400-$500 range and then spend another few hundred on some decent kit lenses (18-55IS, 55-250-IS). This combo would pretty much cover all your needs for starting out. The 40D is a great all around camera that's fast enough to shoot sports (moto) and also will give you great results with family/portraits. Being an owner of all Canon pro bodies and L lenses I can tell you that the 40D is the best bang for the buck. I could take a 40D to the track with a good lens and come home with the same results that my 9K body/lens setup would produce...of course it would give me much less keepers, but it can definitely do the job.

Don't worry about buying used - just find a nice body on CL from a non-smoking home with low shutter count

Canon 20d shoots just as good as the 40,50 and 60d. You can find em for cheap if your on a budget. I use the 20d for studio stuff still. Check out my site www.cmtwaterhousings.com. all product photos were taken using the 20d. the surfing photos were mostly taken w the Canon 1d3 and 1d4 as well as the Nikon d700 and d3.
You can also find good deals on the Canon 1d3 since the 1d4 was released...no comparason between the 1d series and the 20,40, 50 60d series. Nikons are less comon among professional photogs. I wouldnt buy one.
Lenses for moto, Canon 70-200 2.8, Canon 8-15 fisheye, Canon fixed 50mm. all you will ever need! 8-15 fish isnt available yet though...should have been out months ago. The Tokina 10-17 is also a very nice fisheye!

wtf. isnt that the point with all cameras? take a picture at what your pointing the damn thing at? what would be the purpose of the view finder if your taking a picture of something not in the view finder?

Canon 550D, 60D or 7D depending how much money you want to spend. Why Canon? They are the best if you want to film with (but you will some time to learn how to film with in a proper way).

Canon 5D does wonders, maybe too much for a beginner, but it took me no time to take amazing pictures, blows everything else away. It makes me look professional.
