Vital Review

In the saturated world of motocross and off-road gear, Fly Racing has become a very serious brand, and their Sector Boot is something that has caught my attention. I’ve always been fascinated with boots. It could come from my track record of broken ankles, or my obsession with rolling up to the track with sparkly white boots that help make me look faster than I really am. Either way, I’ve always been a fan of the Fly gear and figured it was about time to see how these things stack up against the Gaernes, Alpinestars, and Sidis of the world.

Fly Racing Sector Boot Features:

  • Torsion Control System® – a unique structure, which reduces the risk of ankle injury by restricting excessive backwards, forwards, and sideways foot torsion, while allowing necessary freedom of movement.
  • Slip-on Inner Bootie – constructed from breathable materials for increased comfort and includes gel inserts for extra protection of the malleolus (ankle) bones.
  • Breathable 3D Mesh Comfort Lining – throughout the boot interior provides an extra level of comfort.
  • Reinforced shin plate with polyurethane ankle, rear heal, and toe box – provides added protection from impacts and debris.
  • Single compound replaceable rubber sole.
  • Inner rubber heat guard.
  • All buckles And straps are Replaceable.
  • CE certification.
  • MSRP: $439.95.

First Impressions

When the boots arrived, I looked them over and there were a few features that I noticed right away. I liked the idea of the inner booty (which many boot companies have used at one time or another), plus the ankle protection and “joint” area looked unique in comparison to other boot brands. Lastly, the fit and finish looked great.

Once I was past the looking and drooling stage, I threw on the new boots so that I could moonwalk around the house. Upon first feel, the boots were definitely going to need to see some track time to break in properly, as they were quite stiff. But once I got them buckled up and cinched down, they did fit great and were quite comfortable in all areas. Personally, I’m a size nine in most shoes and the Sector boots were true to size for me.

On the Track

My first few rides out with the boots were successful. They fit well, while the buckles tightened down snugly and I could definitely feel the stability in the ankle area while on the track. They were stiff for the first couple rides out, but they finally broke in and became just as comfortable as any other high-end boot I’ve owned. I do like my boots fairly snug, so I found myself tightening the buckles after the first outing of the day on a few occasions as they stretched out. While riding, you feel the additional stability that the built in ankle protection provides, which inspires confidence while going through deep ruts and through rhythm sections. I really liked the booty insert and how it helped make the fit plush for my foot. I thought my feet might get too hot with the additional mesh, but the boots seem to breathe surprisingly well while riding.

Long-Term Durability

Most boots I’ve had in the past have lasted around three to five years...or less. The main areas of wear that I’ve experienced before were things like steel toe stitching coming undone, buckles breaking, and worn out soles in the middle area of the foot.

I’ve been testing out these Fly Sector Boots for about five months now and haven't had one issue when it comes to durability. I’ve pressure washed the boots after each ride, washed the booties in the washing machine, and have dragged toes in more corners than I’d like to admit. So far the boots are in stellar condition, while all the buckles, steel toes, and internal mesh still seem as good as new. These are obviously made to endure the years, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it takes at least a few riding years from me to show any weak points on these boots.

Last Words

In my opinion, Fly Racing's Sector boots can hold their own against any current top shelf boot on the market. While they're a bit stiff initially, I wouldn’t have any concerns with them standing the test of time and comfort at the races. With some boots reaching into the $550-$600 range, the Sector stands as a pretty decent deal and gives Fly Racing fans another high-end product to complete the their head-to-toe arsenal. The only real negatives are the stiff feeling over the first few rides and the lack of color options.
