Finished my 1983 YZ125 build and found that the carb that was on the bike was a cheap Chinese piece of junk! I bought a new Mikuni VM34SC to install but am unsure on the jetting. The bike has a DG pipe and silencer so I'm not sure if stock jetting will be good enough or not. Also, I'm running 32:1 mix and not the 24:1 as stated in the manual.
Stock is:
Main 280
Pilot 60
Needle in third position
I was able to fire the bike with the junk carb but it was boggy and stalled when trying to move. I was able to smooth it out a bit adjusting the air screw but it still would stall when releasing the clutch. I can't see any jet numbers so have no idea what is in that old carb.
Advice is appreciated!
Guys, gals, I have some leftover parts if anyone is interested. They're up on eBay currently. Full Yamaha front spoke set. Full (plus extras) Yamaha rear spoke set. $120 for each set. Way less than what I paid. I did mount some of the spokes on some newer rims but decided to stick with stock instead of aftermarket (Thailand) rims. Spokes are still like new!
Also have a 1984 stator generator set that is brand new ($125 +shipping). A 1983 YZ250 stator - complete assembly ($100 + shipping). And a front and rear hub both with new bearings and paint ($100 for both + shipping).
I also have a completely rebuilt second 24X motor that would include a stock pipe and silencer, re-sleeved cylinder, all new bearings and seals, new Boyesen reeds, stator included, fully rebuilt power valve system, kicker, new front sprocket, new clutch plates, new shifter, rebuilt water pump, new titanium head studs and nuts, new Yamaha piston, rings, bearing, pin,....no expense was spared on the rebuild. The crankshaft is perfect with no play! $500 alone just for the re-sleeve back to stock 56mm. All you need is a carb! I do have some radiators and stock hosing as well if you want them. They aren't the greatest but should work without issue.
I was going to just keep it as a backup for the rebuild but need to recover some of the expense put out on the restoration. Not ready to list this yet but it will be coming eventually. I'll take offers if anyone wants to light the fire under my ass on this! :-)
