Do guys that ride for teams like pro circuit/fox star/thor have to wear that gear and how do they get paid? Does the gear company pay the team and the team pays the riders and is the pay negotiable or is there a set pay split evenly with the riders or each rider have separate contracts for gear?
I know back in the day the gear contract was probably the 2nd or 3rd most lucrative behind the OEM contract.
I've heard different ways depending on the deals. I've heard of teams getting X amount to run the gear. And then they pay the rider with some of that money and other money that comes from sponsors as an annual salary. And then sometimes the gear company will have bonuses so that if a rider is doing better they get a direct payment from the gear company in addition to the money given to the team. I'm sure depending on the contracts or the rider, that there could be extra money put in for a rider. JT was talking a little on Pulp about how they were trying to Get Kenny away from Fox when he went to the Hep Suzuki team. It sounded like Kenny was going to make the deal more expensive for Fly.
I would be interested in seeing how much money it really costs to make some of the gear , if they did not do any R&D or advertising , no paid racers. Just making and selling the gear based off a pattern they stick with.
crazy high markup on gear. bikes and hard parts much lower. and then gear items like goggles are likely the highest markup.
I am a dealer for one of the bigger Gear brands . I figured that there are higher margins on the gear since there are higher margins available at the dealer level VS parts. For some of the bigger name gear brands I wouldn't be surprised if the advertising/Pro rider pay is close to or is the biggest expense .
