Eying up an '18 yz450f with only 27ish hours on it. From my understanding this is the same generation as the highly praised '22 yz450f's, but what is it about the 18 yz450f's that kept them from having the same praise as the 2022 version? Also, are there any common mechanical or durability issues with the 18's?

starter clutch is a known issue on the 18's. At 27 hours it has probably already been taken care of. For 2020 the 450 got a new cylinder head, and a map buttton on the bars. otherwise they are basically the same.

Here's a breakdown of what has changed on the YZ450F over the years in the 2020 YZ450F MXA test (2020 = biggest changes, then 2021 and 2022 = very minor IMO):

I'd check that ^^^ out and then some VitalMX 450F shootout videos for 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 to see if you're a rider who would benefit from the changes from 2018 to 2022.

Lastly, I thought this Keefer write-up, covering the 2018-2020 YZ450Fs was EXCELLENT, helping you understand what's changed with each model year and the relative impact to the rider experience:

What was the issue, would it be easy to spot by running but not riding the bike? (Lots of snow up here). And how big of a fix? Thanks!

I have a 2020 and never experienced the problem but from what I understand it is just an updated part number. the starter clutch sits behind the case cover, not a difficult fix but could certainly ruin your day if it goes bad at the track. If it does go bad the starter spins but doesnt engage to turn the engine over.

Back when I started thinking about jumping ship to a Yamaha in the spring of 2020, there were a few leftover 2019's that had my interest. After doing a bunch of reading of the differences between the 2019 and the 2020, most if not all seemed to rate the 2020 as a better bike as it made some great strides in the cornering department and refined some other things. I had reached out to Kris Keefer about the differences and he said go for the 2020 as well. I was still unsure if I wanted to try the yz, so I kept riding my 19 kawi 450 for the rest of the 2020 and 2021 seasons. A few weeks ago, I finally made the jump and picked up a low hour 21 yz450. I wont get to try it till spring. I would have got a new one, but there werent many around and i was looking at $11k otd. No thanks lol
