Does anyone know if a MOTOTEK CDI-31Y(designed for the '77 model) will work on the '79 model?

No, it will not fit, you have to use the CD-80 (I just saw someone posted one on ebay). Although the seller states it fits a 77-78 Suzuki RM125, the CD-80 is for the 78/79 YZ80, I know this because I have two of them new in the box.
