My son rides a 2007 kx 85 with the stock small wheels. I am planning on changing out the wheels for the larger "big wheels" (19" front/16" rear). So that he might be more competitive in the "super-mini" class. Can I simply bolt the larger wheels on and be done, or are there more modifications I will have to make (i.e.: swingarm, sprockets, etc.)? Any help and/or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You can't just swap the wheels. You need the supermini swingarm as well, plus new brake lines.

If you aren't going to build the motor up to a 112, I think I'd just leave the smaller wheels.

And if you are going to do a real supermini, a used KX100 might get you there faster and easier.

Back when we did it on Yamahas (they don't make a supermini, just the kit to convert the 80/85) the swingarm and brake lines and necessary bushings etc. ran about $1100-1200, plus your labor. Wheels were on top of that.

Steve, thanks for the info. I am going to look into it a little further, but with the cost involved I will probably stick with the stock wheels. My son is 13, he is already riding a 125 and a 250f a little, at best we will only get another year out of the 85 anyway! Again, thanks for the info.

I bought a swingarm on ebay one time. It was listed as a KX85, but I knew KX minis at the time. I studied the picture good and compared the KX85 and KX100 in the shop. Sure enough it was from a KX100!!! Got it for $5.
