Just a question for those who made the switch from a 250 smoker to a 450 thumper.

Did you find the 450 easier to ride, and ultimately did it make you faster and more consistent?

Certainly easier to ride. And definitely faster over the length of a moto. You do notice the extra weight, and you do have to ride them differently. Much easier to go faster on slick hard pack tracks, but deep sand tracks you might wish you still had your 250 two stroke. What 450 you looking at ??

I went 250 2T to 450 and back. I feel that it is down to what you are comfortable with. Plus, I really don't believe that you go faster on one or the other but you will probably get better starts on the 450. For me, I have been doing better once I went back to the 250. As for being faster at the end of the race, I am better on the 250. I don't know if it is the weight or the handling but I am defiantly better on the 250. Plus, I will take 2-3 $150 top ends a year to a $900 dollar top end on my 450.

agreed. there is a reason the 4 strokes are popular, but that doesnt mean they work for everyone in terms of preference and comfort level.

hope on a 450 MORE THAN ONCE and then base your decision on that. ive ridden a few 450's in the desert and then rode the same 450's at the tracks i ride. when it came down to getting a new bike, i still ended up buying a new 250sx. not trying to say the 4 strokes are bad, but i have my preference and i love a good 250 2 stroke. to each their own, but a bunch of people telling you about the 4 strokes is a lot different than actually hoping on one and seeing if YOU like it.

I do love my 2 stroke, but find that unless teh track conditions are perfect, I really struggle to keep pace with the 4 strokers.
I have ridden a few 250f's, but found that they lacked a bit of power, and seem to take a while to get into there work, which is obviously different to a 250 2t where it all happens pretty quick.

Each definitely have their own advantages and disadvantages. Are you racing 250 class, or an open class? I ride both, and love riding both. I was totally against 450's for a lot of years, and hated them every time I rode one. Now I love mine and love racing it. Just had to get used to what it took to ride one. Smooth is fast, and take advantage of the extra traction they get. I have a '12 CRF, and once you get them set up to handle properly, they are great.
