External Flashes??

I have a canon rebel XS and wanted to try messing around with some external flashes. Can you guys recommend something relatively cheap but would work well. As you can tell by my camera I am not a pro by any means but would like to work my way there. Any advice is well appreciated.

I shoot Nikon, so I can't tell you anything about a flash for your camera, but if you're looking for advice, check out the "Anybody got any photo questions?" a couple posts below this. Photo advice from Paul Buckley is like getting riding lessons from Rick Johnson.
