I'm looking at a 83 CR250 in the morning. Do those bikes have issues with rotting water pump cases?

Have the gearboxes been sorted since the horrific 81 Cr?

I love the look of 83 Honda's. That was the only 250 I ever really liked enough to be comfortable on. Reading the current thread about thelook 83 250 just amazes me that 1983 was 30 years ago.

Rot Like this? Yep, 83 had it bad. Replace the whole deal with a complete setup from the 1981 CR250 as it is made out of aluminum. Of course you will have to pay more for that one assembly than the whole bike is worth! Use it as a negotiating point. Pull the radiator cap and make sure the radiators aren't plugged up from this.

What made it "rot" like that? Something the castings were made of?

They were cast out of magnesium. Super light, super trick and also super corrosive. Funny metal.

Use of hi mineral content water (tap water), leaving said water in the cases when not in use, and poor lubricative properties of said bilge water. Skip fwd to present day. Hi quality premix radiator fluid and removal when not in use and presto... No rot. Few if ever water impeller failures. Ain't progress grand?
