Both. You have to have something from their past to look at to see if what they are saying they will do in the future is believable.

Then one can only believe McCain will be the same as Bush since he voted along with him 90% of the time in 2007 and since 2001 has been in agreement with him 89% of the time

Not to be contrary, well actually yes to be contrary, consider that McCain is opposed to Bush 10% of the time and IF you were interested in drawing a conclusion as to what type of Presidency McCain would have, understanding what that 10% of opposition consisted of is crucial. I.E. if you and I agreed on 99 things out of one hundred would we be the same? What if that 1 thing we disagree on is that I believe you will have no personal freedom? Are we still the same? Any idea what percentage of the time the Messiah voted with President Bush?

How often do McCain and Obama vote alike? 87.5%

I honestly don't know, but I bet it would shock some people...

My concern is what promises can be kept from the campaign trail, as opposed to what's being said to get elected.
