I wrote this for English at my independent studies school, my teacher really likes it and last April I scored "Advanced" in English Language Arts. Take a look, keep the harsh comments out of here. (We all know how that is, here)

Do you know the ole saying “everything happens for a reason”? Well I believe strongly in that. Four and a half months ago I crashed while riding my dirt bike and broke my humorous, and dislocated my shoulder. My shoulder was out of the socket for over an hour before a nearby hospital popped it back into place. At the time I thought it was the worst thing that could possibly happen, but it just began a whole new world of options.

The day of the injury, I felt quicker and more confident than ever! My fitness finally felt up to par, and my speed was superb. The first big race of the new season was just shy of 6 weeks away, and I was ready to win. I figured I would be off the bike for up to 4 weeks, than get back right before the first big race in early January. I was mistaken, it’s now 18 weeks out and I don’t know when I’ll be back on the bike. My doctor said I can ride again, but not do any jumps, and anyone familiar with motocross knows that racing motocross consists of a variety of big jumps. I’m getting ready to turn pro, and if I want to make that next big step I can’t have any sort of lingering injuries.

At the time, I made ridiculous quotes such as “God hates me” and “I have the worst luck”. In a silly turn of events, my time off the bike was a chance to clear my head out of all negative thoughts and in the end it got me a lot closer to God. I know talking about religion can be a touchy subject when writing, but I believe that if you love God, you’ll love life. It’s arguable, but it’s helped me a lot the last few months to get through drama and keep me positive.

I’ve gotten more into photography as of late, too. I was fortunate enough to have my Aunt let me borrow her camera for a day at Supercross. I got the chance to show what I can do in another aspect of racing. Instead of being the one on the track, I got a chance to shoot photography from off the track and I loved it. The feeling you get when you take a great shot is awesome and I can’t wait to do it again. I was desperately saving up for a camera of my own, when my Aunt bought a new camera and let me have the one I used at Supercross. I saved up for a new lens and bought it a little over a week ago. The lens I used at Supercross was a 90mm, with no zoom, and this new lens is 50-250mm. I can’t wait for the future when I get to experiment some more at the races. The next race I plan on being at is the Vegas Supercross in May. The US Grand Prix of Motocross is also the next weekend, I can’t wait!

I haven’t just gotten into photography, but I have been writing race reports as well! I’ve been thinking about becoming a writer, since I am a passionate motocross enthusiast, the next best thing besides being a racer would obviously be a race reporter. Going to all the races and writing about what just happened seems like a lot of fun and I hope I have the opportunity to for a website someday.

Lastly, one more thing that I’ve grown an interest into is an investment I made, I can’t say too much about it but I’m looking forward to the outcome of it. If it goes through as planned, I’ll finally afford to turn pro and live the dreams I’ve always wished I can live.

Everything happens for a reason and right when you think you’ve hit rock bottom, it can be the beginning of a whole new world of options. Getting injured was obviously a devastating injury, but I’ll be back out there soon enough and with new outlooks on life.

Wait for college before you even think you've slightly grown up.

Ddavis, has the prince of Nigeria called back yet? Wink

Nice write up man. I'm glad you got a bit better perspective after your crash. Truth is, most of use were, or still are, very ignorant, especially when we were your age about life and what really matters. It usually takes a drastic change of plans to open your eyes a bit.

Motocross teaches you alot about life because, just like on the track, its not if but when you fall. Bad things and rough times are part of racing and part of life. Take what you learn from racing and apply it to life, and vise versa.

When do you start riding again?

Devin-

I'm sure you spell checked your paper and "humorous" passed. But that ain't the bone you broke. (Insert funny bone joke here.....)

You might want to check that before you turn it in.

Content is good- nice job.

For an English paper, I think I'd use "old" instead of "ole". We aren't toreadors after all. And neither is this Merry Ole England, nor a Swedish farmer named Ole.
