Nuclear Power

What is your guys' take on it? I suggest you watch Pandora's Promise. I feel if every country used nuclear power, we could slow or even stop global warming. Also, if we use a breeder reactor, the bi-product from the reactor can fuel it so it's literally a never ending fuel source.

What would all the Coal miners do then ?

not every country can use it safely, take us (New Zealand) for example, the whole country is on a fault line, so getting a safe spot is not possible, and also we do not need the level of power needed, already we get most our power from renewable sources (mostly hydro)

I agree it should be used instead of things like coal power plants tho,

See, I am not a politician but the industry for building powerplants would be huge especially in a large country such as America, China, or Russia. And that is great for New Zealand, seriously. More countries need to get into some form of renewable energy because once were out of fossil fuels we will be fucked. I once read a study that humans naturally tend to procrastinate things until the last minute, and I just don't think that the caliber of how large of a problem of running out of these resources would be something that you could just deal with at the last minute. I'm sure there is someone out there finding and researching but they just don't want to propose the idea that we are running low on natural resources. People would freak out. Also, a little-known fact that nuclear energy is the safest energy safer than solar panels.

on the safety point, can you show me a large solar panel disaster like fukushima or chernobyl?

If you have Netflix, I highly highly highly suggest you watch Pandoras promise. The movie covers those corners but I will try to explain. Solar panels increase your chances of having a fire in your home very dramatically. See that is not a large-scale disaster such as Chernobyl or Fukushima, but to this day you experienced the equivalent radiation on a flight as in Chernobyl. The average reading on a Geiger scale in Chernobyl is 21.56 microsieverts the average dosage of radiation you get on a plane flight is 21.23 microsieverts. Kind of weird huh? People create this notion that radiation is this huge scary problem and that's why we can't have nuclear power but, most anti-nuclear ads are funded by coal companies, which help develop solar panels. Realistically solar panels could not create enough energy for us to live off of them. It's a great idea but it's insufficient in the grand scheme of things. Most places do not get enough sun. On a daily basis you get up to 1.5 uSv. (Microsieverts) And by the way the reason Chernobyl and Fukushima were so disastrous is because of the fact that they use a different type of reactor instead of the breeder reactor. If more countries invested into the breeder reactor things would be much safer.

Everything "SANE" like lets slowly Mandate over time getting off Fossil fuels and onto wind / solar etc.
Keeps getting thrown out / voted down.
Like you said basically " Last minute and only when backed into a corner " does it even get any attention or concern.

If you're into the subject of clean renewable energy I cannot stress how much you need to watch this movie. It covers all the corners of wind, solar and every other renewable energy and how nuclear is superior.
6/22/2014 9:38pm
Only watch it if it's actually interesting you. If it's not there's no point.
6/22/2014 10:04pm
It's important. We need to stop burning things for power. Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth scared the crap outa me. :^) I wonder how much of his information was real and how much was from a biased left-wing source, but nevertheless. mankind has to deal with this sooner or later. Nuclear seems to be the only feasible solution until science comes up with something else.

6/22/2014 10:20pm
There is no reason to come up with anything else. Its 110% renewable.

You will never see another large scale Hydro project in this country ever again, thanks EPA/ Sierra Club. Same people dont want you to have nuclear or coal. Since most of these groups are based in Cali and they love solar. Great, works awesome for Cali where the sun shines all the time, would work terrible for the Midwest where we have a ton more cloud cover. We have alot of wind, oh wait now people dont want windmills in their backyards, and animal rights groups are claiming they kill tons of birds.....

So yeah, this is unfortunately what our world has evolved into.

X2. I wonder if there is more money in Nuclear than there is in Wind and Solar? What? OK! Nuclear is the safest then.

People like you are the problem. Hey, if you don't want to preserve the world for your future generations that's on you. I'm no hippy tree hugger, but I don't want to have to tell my grandchildren that at one time there were areas with wildlife.

-Nuclear power plants are expensive.
-Chernoble/Fukashima type screwups.
-nobody wants to store the waste
-You have to mine Uranium just like you have to dig around for coal/natural gas
-vulnerable to being a terrorist target

But I like Nuclear. Makes a whole lot of power and doesnt take up much space like those stupid windmills that are all over the place up here.

No wildlife because of global warming/climate change? I dont believe that for a second. If an area is warmer then it used to be you might see one type of wildlife move out while you see another type move in.

I'm a big proponent of nuclear energy.

I have written a number of papers on atomic energy policy, I'm fascinated by it. I'll have to check out that video.

I know you're on summer break from high school but once you grow up and learn to think for yourself a little more you'll figure out what this whole "global warming" scam is all about. I'm not saying I'm against trying to preserve our environment, just that you have to look at it from other ways other than those based on a hoax.

Bob, I'm interested to know what you think 'this whole "global warming" scam is all about'. I unconvinced myself but I do love American conspiracy theories.Smile

It's about money, power and control. It's that simple.

First off, the only reason Fukushima happen was because of the earthquake and tsunami. You have the wrong idea about nuclear reactors. The type of nuclear reactor that produces a waste product is not the kind that I'm talking about. The breeder reactors byproduct is its fuel. It is renewable and there is no waste. Alright and forget I said anything about global warming. That's besides the fact all I'm trying to say is we need to get a different source of fuel because coal will not last us forever.

Sorry for the double post. But where do you think those animals will go? Just take a bus to the nearest cooler habitat.

Some day we'll be farming the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Is that really so bad?
6/23/2014 11:48am
I only had time to watch 5 minutes of this but those 5 minutes were amazing. I am in a better mood now for having watched it. I can't wait to watch the rest tonight at home.

Whether you're an ecofreak or a hardcore right winger like me, this is good news.

For the Ecofreak: less greenhouse gases
For the money-hungry business types like me: cheap energy equals economic growth

Thorium reactors are very safe and can't melt down like Fukashima did/is.

If you don't want to use the byproducts of a reactor to make weapons, you can create a very safe reactor.

Germany doesn't get anywhere near the sunshine that California does and is generating half their required power through solar and that percentage is rising all the time.

One of the founders of greenpeace (he's not a fan of the current organization) is an advocate of nuclear power. As are many other save the planet type groups. It's a very clean energy source, but has been mishandled because of nations wanting to make weapons from their reactors rather than find the safest way to generate power with nuclear energy.

I think I read somewhere that you have to generate electricity for 2 years with solar cells just to get back to the
energy what it took to make them. Anybody else read that?
