Mythbusters tried to do that and failed. Split a car down the middle like that.

They hit it off center. Look at the big piece on the roll-back, it has the engine, steering rack, trans, etc.
They just peeled the side off of it. Mythbusters kept going for the middle because that was the myth.

I always laugh at people that think old cars are safer because they are big and heavy and have thicker steel. Completely wrong. I love vintage and muscle cars, but if I had to be in an accident I would want it to be in a new vehicle. Old cars weren't engineered for safety, new ones are.

This past weekend a 21 year old woman lost control of this 2010 sedan, rolled 3 or 4 times tearing 2 of the wheels off in the process and the car came to rest on it's roof, unrecognizable as a car. When first responders arrived they believed they would be dealing with a fatality. They had to cut her out of the car. She was released from hospital 3 hours later with bruises. Bruises, thats it.

It's amazing that fewer people in total die from car crashes then compared to many years ago. One ER Dr. said air bags save many lives. Before people would smash their aorta against the steering column with bad results.

A bit off topic, but does anyone else think todays road designs (in general) just plain aren't suited for the technology?

Seems like our road designs still look way to much like they did when all we had were horse and buggy or even cars with a top speed of 20 mph.

It just seems incredibly stupid to me, now that virtually any car can hit 3 digit speeds, to have trees and telephone polls right on the edge of the road....and it also seems stupid to me to have two cars (going 60-80 mph each) drive right towards each other, with only a painted yellow line separating them (that would have worked with the lower speeds...but now, with current speeds, its just plain stupid!)
