I crashed my mac today.

First time since I got it. It's been on 24/7 for 8 months and I finally got a blue screen.

I cannot believe this rooster.

In light of your admission - I have recently stumbled upon the fact that my HD is slowly going bad on me.

It has begun randomly locking on me. Not a lock from the OS or anything, and no virus', but this is my first hardware failure!
It is fine for everything, but if I try to play games, generally when loading, the HD locks and just sits in 'busy mode', with nothing happening. I also run my cpu 24/7, and have for pretty much the past 4-5 years since I built it.

It's been a good beast, but I am not too worried because my pc is 4-5 years old, and I've been itching to build a new one anyhow in light of some of the newer games out. I also have all my important docs & such backed up on an external HD so when it finally shits and doesn't run at all - I'll just pitch the HD, play on the wifes PC until I build a new one.

You actually got a blue screen though? I thought they just locked up and were unresponsive to any buttons...

Blue screen, no text just a brief blue screen.

Rebooted automatically.

Took all of 25 seconds or so to come back.

I was just sitting here stunned the whole time. It was such an event I had to tell someone who cared.

BTW - Go RAID (hardware). Huge improvement if your system needs to do any kind of substantial data transfers. I'm not sure if it helps the seek/access time, but I'll copy and delete the the same 4 gig file across the network just to sit in amazement at how fast the scroll bar moves. Of course I still remember when hard drives were hardly any faster than a 5 1/4 floppy. Maybe I'm just easy to impress.

Holy smokes!

It's wild when something unexpected happens Wink

I don't remember HD's that slow... but I do remember being on a 150mHz machine while everyone else I knew was getting into much nicer PC's.

Hell, I remember buying an upgraded video card for one my old pcs... I can't remember how many mb's it was... all I knew was, I needed it to play some MX game I had dl'd or bought or something.

Then I sold it to a friend later when I got a newer PC. I think it was when I got my 550mHz machine - Look out!

Thanks for the advice on RAID - it was something I had been considering, but I think I'll just make it a 'for sure' thing now.
