GoPro/YouTube Quality

I posted in the photo/video forum but this one gets more traffic so figured I would try it here.

I am having problems with the quality of my GoPro videos, edited or not, when uploaded to youtube. I formerly used a Contour HD filmed in 720p@60fps, edited in iMovie, and had no issues. Ever since I started using a GoPro Hero 3+ Black the video has moments where the quality just drops as soon as it gets uploaded to youtube (it looks fine on my mac). I thought it might have been from the editied process in iMovie but I posted the raw video (below)from last weekend and i does the same thing.



As soon as their is excess motion off the start it seems to go to hell. On the edited version I have tried several different file types, bit rates, and about anything else I could think of which is why I then just tried to upload the raw video. Could is be a hardware issue on my Mac (although, like I said, it looks fine to watch on my mac), an internet upload speed issue, something else? Not sure what else to try at this point. Any ideas?

Had a Go Pro that went bad. Had to switch it out. maybe hit their web site and check for possible causes?

Sorry I realize now it only plays bad on YouTube..Is that right?

And yes, it is only bad on YouTube. Perfectly fine outside of it. I was going to Vimeo a shot but wanted to make sure YouTube was a lost cause before I paid for enough space at Vimeo.

It's YouTube's compression. My woods videos with my Hero2 are the same as yours. They are fine local but on YouTube they look much worse. I think riding through the trees in combination with the compression makes it doubly bad. My street track videos aren't quite as bad as the dirt videos, but still the compression makes them worse. But then again I use the Contours on the road courses so that might have a "little" to do with it. I think once you start getting millions of views on your channel they compress the video less so it's higher quality when people watch it.

It's almost exactly every 5 seconds on my desktop with 100 meg interwebs.

Void is exactly right.

Know Bit Rate is not as important as decode speed. YouTube have limitless space but limited CPU resources.
Send them something easy to decode, RAW uncompressed video, even if the file size is huge.

YouTube is not going to spend hours transcoding to maintain quality. Its that simple.

Have you tried it on another site like Vimeo or DailyMotion?

It was just odd that the ones filmed with the contour did not do it. (example: ) Obviously the quality is just slightly worse in general from a several year old contour, but it still struck me as odd it was only with the GoPro videos.

The other thing that confused me my brother used my same camera, with the same settings, and edited with the same software (although it was uploaded from a different connection) and his seemed to come out fine. .

I have not yet tried Vimeo or any other site, although I'm sure I'll get there at some point. It seems like I see enough good quality on youtube (even from people without millions of hits) that I figured I was just missing something.
