Actually, new riders rarely ask this question. I wish I had.

Do not try to "stick the landing" like a gymnast. That's when stuff breaks.

the first thing i learned, was too never try to break the fall with your arms. id rather be bruised and sore than in a cast for 6 weeks minimum because i broke a wrist...

Once you have completed the crash get back on the bike. If your shifter is broken utilize your left hand to upshift from what remains bolted to the bike.

If you crash on the back side of a jump get the hell off the track, and let the other riders know your bike is there!
