Just starting off help me make some decisions

Well im new to mx but not to action sports learned to ride my 81 z50 at 5 and riden 4 wheelers ever since as well as Raced and done freestyle bmx
Questions i have are what size bike should i buy 125 or 250?
im going 2 stroke for cost reason
im 5 9 and 135lb so which would be easiest racing but could also do well in the trails im leaning 250 but wanted to get opinions from so riders.

You are way too light to ride the 250 i think, but i wouldn't suggest a 125 either (they are way to slow). So it depends, if you have the money to buy a 250, you can go with that, bulk up a little bit, and for sure revalve the suspension and change springs. Or you can buy a 150 from KTM or Husqvarna, or a Yamaha and buy a 150 cilinder kit and maybe a pipe, all that will cost less than the 250 and would be pretty fast and nice to ride for your weight and height, and have some more money left to buy tires and other things you will need on the way. Just my opinion, i have not used a 2 stroke since 85cc a couple years ago, but i race against some 150 2 strokes in the MX2 class and they are happy and the bikes are just as fast as a 250f. The 2 guys that i race against that use a 2 stroke and not a 4 stroke use them because they are light weight and prefer it to riding a 250f. I hope this was usefull.

yeah i love the ktm 150 it sounds like a good inbetween but i am buying a used bike is the problem 150 arent very available as far as size and weight between 2 stroke 125 and 250 is only like 15lb diff but im sure the power is quite abit more.

As far as actual racing ive heard 125 is much more competative and rough compared to 250 is that true or just ppl talking?
Also it would be a 2 stroke 125 if i got one may have a bit more go than a 4

i really don't know what they mean abour "more competitive and rough" of the 125, but the 250 is faster and stronger, but they are not easy to ride if you are not strong enough, or weight enough (the height is not a problem). I am sure you can find a 150 KTM from 2009 or so, if you want something older, you can always buy a 125 of any brand and buy a 150cc cilinder kit. Maybe you could ask someone you know with a 250 if you could ride it for a lap or two and see how it feels. Oh and the weight difference between the 125 and 250 is not the problem, the thing is that the suspensions come set for a certain weight, and the 250 comes like for 170-180 pounds, suspension is everything in matters of how a bike works and handles. And i also say it would be very difficult to control the huge amount of power they have with your weight (don't take it the wrong way i am just saying you are a bit too light for a 250 Smile )

haha yeah thats true well looks like 125 is what ill do then ill learn more on it any ways as far as carrying my speed etc. thanks for the advice any tips on brands as far as reliability power cost to maintain?

i can't help you a lot in this one because i have only own 4 strokes 250f 's. but i did have 2 85cc 2 strokes yamaha and they were great, i never had problem with them, and yamaha is known in the 4 strokes by having the most durable and reliable engine, so i would go with yamaha. As far as power they are all really similar, don't base your decision on that. And as far as cost to maintain, you should go to the dealer near to your house or the one you are planning to buy from and ask which brand they support the most, sometimes they have spare parts from every brand but like 20% discount on KTM parts for example. So yeah do some research on that, but the cost is always similar for all brands.

Im just a little guy 5'6 130lbs , I would say get a 250 ,for just general use ive been riden on and off for like 20 years last 3 bikes were 250. We have dunes around here and they are 125 motor eaters. They have to be pretty rung out to start maken power, more rpm =more wear on motors. I dont plan on doing many races and the ones i do will just be for fun, just to finish 2 motos is good enough for me. Any race scene is super hard these guys been doing it usally since they were kids and fly. Just dont jump in and think your a hot shot.take it easy for a few months. If you dump either bike in the mud and your 3/4 wore out they both feel heavy. Im not super fast by anymeans but love to watch some of these local big guys try to keep up . I feel i would rather have more power than i need than not enough. I have never had my suspension revalved but am planning on it next year to see if all the hype is true, being so light i never had felt it was too far off.


For instance last time out with my quad buddys they watch me wail around on my yz250... well near end of day i offered one guy to try my bike out. I guess from watching me scoot around at a decent pace, he figured if this little guy can do i can too .. 2laps in he looped it over back words bike landed on his leg and busted it.. Any bike will loop out if you dont focus or know what your doing

If anyone tells you rebuilding motors for 2t are cheap must just do top ends in new bikes haha.Any motor failure 2t or 4t can get costly, but the 2t will be cheaper, bottom ends are 200ish, piston kits are 100ish, if the cylinder is mess up you in for another 150+ and labor. but thats cheaper than 4t and can do most of the work your self with some special tools


If i could pick any used bike to get i would go with 06 yz250 they are almost same bike as 11 (i heard 12's are detuned for eroupe), have nice alum frames, and 06+ have speed sensitive suspension that i hear is as close to works susp on stock bike.

I'd recommend the 125 because of cost. Used ones are cheap and they are cheap to keep running. I see 2000 YZ125s in my area for $1,000. You can always add a big bore later or sell it for what you've got in it for a 250 when you weigh a little more.
