So I've been on this site for a while but never registered, with riding season around the corner and wanting to pick up a couple new bikes one for myself and one for my gf I'm turning to you guys for some advice.
A little background info. I grew up occasionally riding dirt bikes with my cousins but it was just blasting around fields so no racing or anything like that and really not a lot of seat time. For 7 years through my 20's I had a variety of 600cc sport bikes and supermoto's. Last summer my gf wanted to get a dirtbike so I sold my streetbike and picked up a YZ250 and rode a mix of trails and track and got over not having a streetbike pretty quick. What I'm getting at is I've got quite a bit of experience with bikes but my moto/dirt experience is in the beginning stages.
My gf knew how to ride a bike before she got her present ride, an 03 KX85 and has riding down in terms of your basic skills (clutch/shifting, does some decent hill climbs, can get around a moto track alright and will do some small jumps) but there is room for improvement like myself.
We ride about 50/50 track and trails and both plan on doing a few mx races and hare scrambles this year.
The problem with her set up right now is her size and bike size. She's 5'2"-5'`3` and about 105lbs. The 85 gets her around plenty good but she feels the bike is physically too small which I agree with from watching her ride. We thought about getting a set of wheels from a KX100 but that only solves the seat height problem, she`s still going to be cramped and I think she would benefit from the stability of a full size bike and 21/19 wheels. She rode my YZ a few times and was more comfortable on it but obviously the seat height is way too high. The thoughts now are go with a YZ125 or KTM 150SX. I thinking get the suspension resprung and lowered by a shop and throw a flywheel weight on to take some of the hit out. I have to get her to a shop soon to sit on both to see what's more comfortable but before that any recommendations of one over the other? or any other suggestions? I think going to something like a TTR/KLX etc would be going backwards so I'm thinking a 125 class two stroke is the only option with the better suspension and light weight of the bikes.
Now on to me
I've sold my YZ250 and I'm looking for something fresh after getting my feet wet last year. The YZ was great and really didn't have many complaints about it, I just don't like working on old stuff that I don't know what was done to it and dealing with someone else's problems/mistakes. So right now where I'm at is either a 2015 YZ250f or 2014 KTM 250/300xc. Originally I was looking into a YZ250FX but the price in my area is about $1000 higher then the two bikes I mentioned and with looking to buy two bikes right now budget comes into play. I know with the mix of moto and trail riding I plan on doing the KTM XC is the probably the go to bike but I like Yamaha as a brand and it seems like everyone raves about the new 250f's. I only weigh 135-140 pounds so the suspension will probably have to be re worked on either bike at some point down the road so that's kind of a wash and it sounds like the Yamaha SSS stuff is easier to get dialed in. I am worried about reliability a little bit with the 250f though, reports of rod failures and maybe overheating during trail riding although most of the stuff we ride is 2nd-3rd gear flowing single track not really slow stuff but I'm not sure what I'll encounter when I plan to enter some hare scrambles this year although I doubt around here much is super slow technical kinda stuff.
So what would you guys do?
Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance

My gf, she is 5'2" 105lbs currently rides an 85. Would be at a beginner level but has all the basics down. Would a YZ125 or KTM 150sx lowered and a flywheel weight be a good set up?
Me, lots of street experience but just been starting out in the dirt. I was riding a 05 YZ250. Looking at a 2014 KTM 250xc or 2015 YZ250f? Avoiding the yz250fx right now do to a price difference of close to $1000.
We would be riding a 50/50 mix of trails and track. We both would like to try a couple mx races and hare scrambles this year.
So what would you guys recommend? Other suggestions are welcome.
Your friend is tougher. They say one should only lower a bike about an inch. I don't think an inch lower yz 125 or Ktm150 is going to suit her.
Also something like a ttr125 might not cut it against others on a mx track.
What about that Honda 150 four stroke MX bike? I know a girl that has one of those. Take her to a dealer and let her sit on some. I would actually try to not lower the suspension on one.
.02 good luck
p.s. I wouldn't put a flywheel weight on a 125

yz250f is supposed to be a great bike. if you are going to split time between track and trail, I'd
rather ride a track bike on a trail than a trail bike on a track.
