I picked up a 2014 yz250f last fall and was picking up a few things and read about the longer shift lever. I wore my old "13 years old" old alpinestars tech 8 in size 11. I bought a new pair of Fox instincts but had to go to a size 13. Anyway. What length would you guys recommend? +10mm,+15mm, or +20mm shift lever? Preferably responses from guts that have actual experience. Thanks in advance.

I wear a size 12 and use the +15 tip. That's on a KTM, but I'd guess it would work well with the Yamaha too. Tried a +20, but it was awkward, so I went to the +15.

You might want to get the brake pedal as well. It is adjustable for those of us who have a bigger foot than the size 9 or 10 that the bike is designed for.

I have size 13 boots and I went with the +10mm and it works perfectly for me. I never found the stock shifter to be too short which is why I only went with the +10. I think 10 or 15 would work just fine..

I wear a size 11 and found the 5mm to be plenty. Actually, the whole idea makes sense, but , its flawed.

One reason why is this. Obviously, the shift lever is a big lever....duh...

Anyway, as it gets longer, it requires less effort to shift, but more throw. With stiff boots, its sometimes tough to rotate your ankle up and down much more than you do with a stock lever.

Go find a big hex wrench, and clamp it to your shift lever. You can set your boot in place to match up where you want the tip to land.

Then clamp it 20mm in front of where its at now and look how much further the arc (tip of lever) has to travel to make a shift.

Then maybe decide the money is best spent else ware. I suspect the factories have control over the throw distance and can maybe complete the whole process. We get half of it.

I just ordered the +10. I didn't really notice the stock one being too short either. I did have a few mis- shifts but the bike only has about 10 hours on it and I also did the shift stopper mod over winter.

I found the +5 to be great even though my size 11 boot suggested a +10. Didn't want to be too far away and wasn't convinced I wouldn't go to a lower and further back peg.

Here's a fact, the hammerhead will bend & their customer service was terrible.

I bought one for my 14 yz450 but they didn't have one in stock. they said that the Honda shifter was the same spline just a little shorter but they could make up the difference with the longer tip. That was fine so I let them send it my way. When it got here the splines did match up the best I could tell but after I would ride it was always loose. After a while I got worried I was going to round the spline off so I called and they sent me the correct one and I have not had to tighten it since. If they try to send you one that's not for your bike tell them you can wait! Customer service was awesome btw!

How do these hold up?

I have always found that aftermarket shifters never seem to hold up on the grooved from the shift shaft.

They always seem to develop some play over time.

They do look good though, something you can't save for the stockers.

Not sure about the bending part, but the customer service part is spot on!

My hammerhead did loosen up & overtime I always having to retighten the bolt.

I purchased a Tusk when I got a Zuk & it held up much better.

My yami that had the hammerhead, fell off my stand & it bent inwards! Was actually cutting into the case & it wouldn't bend back. Had to loosen the bolt & back it off the spline a little bit to get it away from the case. Eventually I just put the stock back on, sold the bike a year later & got a Zuk. Purchased the Tusk for the Zuk, never crashed hard nor did it fall so I can't speak to durability but it looked every bit as good as the hammerhead & didn't have the hard square edge the hammerhead did which is why it was cutting into my yami
