Edited Date/Time 1/19/2012 5:38pm
I ask this question to anyone who may have been there, Was it a success? good crowds? atmosphere? We didnt get it here in AU so Im curious if it worked and will it be an annual event?

Shortly after RV won the second main, I chuckled as I imagined the brainchild behind the MEC pitching the idea for the event months ago: "We offer this REDICULOUS purse for ONE rider that wins all three main events. Trust me fellas, NOBODY will be lucky enough to take all 3 races!"

That guy nervously looking over at his bosses before the gate dropped for the final main.....

I know Monster is not hurting from the purse, but really, that was a gamble that I'm sure they hoped had gone in the other direction! 1,000,000 VS a total of 250,000

Do you think when the guy was pitching the idea, he spelled 'ridiculous' wrong? Wink

The track design was pretty good but the dirt was terrible. If you're going to have a million dollar race at least invest in some decent dirt. If I went to a track to ride and it looked like that I would leave.

As someone who's spent their life in marketing I see it completely different.

Monster, Feld's #1 sponsors of the series had 3.5 hours of live TV promotion, where Monster's top sponsored team with Monster's top sponsored rider won three motos in a convincing fashion. The coup de grace, was that he beat the only noticeably Red Bull sponsored rider in Ryan Dungey.

If I was the guy at Monster who came up with the idea, I'd be looking for a raise this week. It's exactly how they would have scripted it if they could.

so correct ! That is the perfect script as it gives more and more kudos to the Sponsor, the sport and the spectacle - this will generate A LOT OF HYPE ! Exactly what they wanted, and the sport needs.

What's everyone think of the 3 10 lap mains? I kind of liked it and think it might make SX more interesting. That and the Semi qualifiers both gave the fans a lot more racing.

Hmm, I think in the third year we'll really know. I would have to say the first year had to have been an investment year. About 1/5 of the seats in an already small stadium were eliminated, and one section was still pretty empty. Yet, there were still a lot of people there, and the LIVE TV is a perk.

The track was cool, it was different, yet it looked fun to ride - minus the shit Vegas dirt, racing it didn't look fun. Passing looked to be a challenge. Of course, I was in the seats and the riders I talked to didn't make the mains.

The opening ceremonies were likely the worst I've seen - the show seemed to be more like X Games than Supercross ... made for TV, not flowing as a live spectator.

The best part was definitely the amount of racing. There was a LOT of racing to see. That's a huge plus.

I would definitely go back next year.

kick ass race and event i say, good format but i would cut the races laps down to 2 laps then extend the last one 2 laps. this event could become an annual prestigious event if everybody (james)would finish their goddamn contracts in time

I can almost guarantee you that no one was paying attention to which energy drink won the race.

if they used the UCI BMX transfer system, it'd be so much better.

I can almost guarantee you if that was true, there wouldnt be any energy drink companies spending a dime in this sport.

Lots & lots of green 'M' logos in front of lots & lots of eyes. And theres even more green 'M' logos all over the interweb now because RV dominated the motos, and those logos will continue to be plastered all over magazines and forums for the next year.

Whether you know it or not, you noticed.

i have a confession. im 30 years old, and i have never purchased a monster energy drink, or a rockstar energy drink.

i have consumed one redbull in the form of a yagerbomb in 2005 in costa mesa california at a bar called "the harp inn" on 17th st.

energy drinks suck.

i hope they dont read my post, pull out of motocross, and plunge us back in to 1985, like DV12 said. ok, i sort of hope they do, energy drinks are the devil.

We were there with our rider Cooper Webb, who placed 2nd in Supermini. Overall, the event was a success. On the track walk you could really see the rocks in the dirt, but they had used sifted dirt in the start area and it was different dirt. The pit set up was nice and parking and access to the stadium was easy. Although we hung out in the pits most of the day and went straight to the press box for the races, the stadium itself appeared to be well- stocked with refreshments. Security personnel were respectful when asking for credentials which can sometimes be a problem when you are constantly going in and out of the pits between practices and motos. The half-time show was a little lame, not the tricks themselves, so much as the presentation. The fireworks at the end were awesome especially against a perfectly clear desert sky. There appeared to be a good crowd and many people came early for practice and stayed until the end. I did notice that there were not quite as many young kids in attendance as at a usual supercross race, but that may have just been a Vegas thing. There was a nice grassy fan zone with a tower set up in the area where the track exited the stadium and it was a nice spot to watch the riders jump the big double in practice. The Professor says the track was one lined without much of a place to pass but even he was impressed with the loop up into the stands and that the designers had tried some different elements. The sand section caused quite a bit of carnage during practice (7 crashes I think we counted) and was a section that clearly the Monster bikes were dialed in for. You could see RV's bike just tracking through it perfectly compared to other bikes. During the day in the pits there were street bike trick demos going on and you could hear the bikes all day long. At first, it sounded like the bikes were on a dyno like at Daytona, but unbelievably they were just pinning it in the parking lot. The Professor shot some footage of this that was worth the ticket to the race just to see up close.

Exactly. Who were the title sponsors of the US Open? I've already forgot but you'll never forget "Monster Cup". Or the 100 hot Monster girls, the million dollars with the Monster logo, the cars drifting with Monster logos, Monster, Monster, Monster. For three and a half hours live in prime time. You can't get anymore impressions on TV than last Saturday night.

While I agree with your conclusion your premise is suspect.

"Green eggs and ham SUCK!"
"Well how do you know that, have you ever tried them?"
"Umm, not really. But I KNOW they suck!!"
