Is it format or riders that make the sport what it is?

My personal opinion is that hype can help, but motocross is all about the riders and the format won't matter much in the end.

History gives some pretty good evidence that there is a pecking order, and for good reason.

I've listened to the idea of changing up the way that the current points system works to make the racing closer, but would it matter in reality?

Yes it would... I like the idea of a "chase format" that they have been throwing around.

Okay, so how would that make things any different for the top 5?

Would it add hype, or would it make the actual racing any closer?

I am new to NASCAR but have been watching quite a bit in the last two years, not enough to know every driver in side and out but follow it a bit, we get every practice, qualifying and Race live in Australia now in all three series.

I think the Chase sucks! Really Drivers and teams put all that effort in all year and then with 10 to go (or how ever many races the chase is ) over two third of the competitors are pushed to the way side and are discarded yet can still have a major influence on the outcome of the chosen few you go for the title. Does not make sence to me, what about the poor drivers in the Chase that just dont happen to be as good on the remaining circuits for the year or could do with a road course or two thrown in during the chase.

Would hate to see that in either SX or MX. How much would it suck to see a rider like a JS, VIllo, Dungey, Reed, Canard miss the first part of the season come back in after two rounds and by round 10 be just out side the top 10 in a really tight season and miss the chase for the last 7 rounds. Then said rider go on a 7 round win streak that would have seen them push for the title after missing the first two rounds but not even be in with a chance, an extreme what if.

Three sides to look at

The Riders, they race for the championship and im sure would like to see things stay the same, a fair and consistant championship over 17 and 12 rounds. One start per points paying race during SX and Two starts per points paying rounds at the outdoors.

The Traditional fan - Would probably like to see it stay the same like the riders, though bring back the Semi's in SX

The new fan, the potential fan - New fans and non MX/SX fans want the excitement, they want mulitple start quick events where the lead riders dont lap upto 5th spot, they want to see 20 or 40 bikes pile into the first turn over and over again waiting for the carnage to unfold.

I guess it is a balancing act of trying to keep the old fans and the traditions of the sport versus growing the sport towards and new audiance, a new generation of audiance that loose interest in less time than it takes to flick a channel on TV.

Myself quite happy watching it the way it is, Being a poor Aussie i have to endure some weird and funky race formats through out our new superX series, with every round having a different format, every race has a different amount of laps and formats that have riders exluded after each heat, so me it just makes things confusing and hard to follow and Im actually interested in the season standings , for the passing average fan why would they want to even think about trying to work out how points are allocated.
