Ive been offered one that hasnt turned a wheel for 9 years, is in pretty good condition, and is cheap, very cheap.

What were peoples experiences of them? any input would be much appreciated.

1997 to 1999 had weak transmissions. They were bad about eating gears other than that its solid. Change every fluid put tires on it and put newer fenders on it call it a day. Crank seals go out on yamahas that sit usually.

I had 3rd and 4th go out on my 1998 YZ250, always thought it was my fault for using ATF.

X2, my 97 yz250 seemed to eat gears, but I was pretty lazy about changing oil. It was a FAST bike and I loved the motor. I would think it would have no problem against modern bikes.

'98 YZ was a bit of a dud out of the box. Just kind of a tame, broad powerband, not too much bark at any point. The hot mod for years was to put '94 cylinders on them but I imagine that supply has long dried up.

Overall it was reliable. They handled great and those old KYB components could be made to work pretty good. The ergos and overall feel of the bike wouldn't feel that outdated, they haven't changed too much since '96 that way.
