i remember someone on the board telling me about twisted dirt and how they figure out how to make tracks for the PC versions of mx games. so i just checked it out. looks like they are making progress with mx vs atv reflex. so does that mean we could see tracks like redbud in it? anyone one have a clue about this stuff and how it works?

Disclaimer: I'm not a programmer...just a lowly networking guy.

The biggest problem with developing custom editors is the lack of source code for the game engine. Obviously, the game is DirectX 9, which is the standard for the consoles. Depending on how the games are compiled, they might be able to decompile files into a usable code that they can work with.

A problem with PC games, and also a great benefit to modders is the script file. I see a bunch of XML files and also a ton of BXML files, which are probably encrypted to deter hackers. It really depends on the design of the engine. There have already been hackers on PC that have faster bikes and things like that.

However, the fact that they can edit the tracks leads me to believe that they figured out a great deal about the game engine. The most obvious downfall is they haven't figured out how to align the skybox and objects like trees to the new terrain. Either way, this looks pretty cool and I'm just as interested as you to hear more about it.

Edit: okay their unlocked tracks for freeride are the xxx.dx9.database files and .dx9.package. They might just be common files that can be reverse engineered with a directx SDK.

Beta version is out, along with some wiki information on how they went about making this mod and how to get started modding tracks.

The way that Reflex does textures looks quite a bit different than any other game editor that I've used before.
