First post in forever (first with this account).
My intentions when getting this bike were to have a 125 to play on, and inevitably put in a new top end, freshen it up here and there, and sell it to get a newer yz250 or ktm250.
Then I got sumo wheels/tires for a good deal, just for some added fun.
Then I ran it dry (like a dingus) and was forced to have to rebuild.
It's been a slow process, given the garage space I had before, work/life, moving, etc etc. Things are finally more underway, but it's already turning into a regular "I need this part, too. Oh and I should get that. ...May as well get a new one of those or upgrade these..."
I'm sure I'll be needing some insight, as I've not done this big of a build before
Starting overview:
- clean everything that is useable - in progress
- black frame and black swing arm - getting done first week of April
- new cylinder needed (if you know of any for an 04 cr125, let me know!) - still need
- new cylinder head needed - still need
- Hot Rods crank bearings and seals - purchased
- Athena gaskets - purchased
- Vertex piston (stock bore) - purchased
- Hot rods crank assembly - purchased
- Polisport re-style kit (black) - purchased
- New clutch (any advice on what to go with?) - still need
- CRF front brake and 260mm rotor (or similar) - still need
- Better suspension - still debating what to get
- New triple clamps or clean up/powder coat the OEM ones - still deciding
- Dirt wheels are pretty iffy, so either freshen up entirely or find a set of black ones (supermoto wheels are good) - still need
- New tank needed (one screw hole is completely ripped out, tank plastic and all) - still need
- New bars (still decided on bend, but no crossbar) - still need
Here's some early pics of the bike to where it stood right around when I seized the motor; I'll add more as they come.

Bike is dirty in all of these (even the back of truck picture after a quick wash and attempt at removing the awful stickers the previous owner had all over it).
Moved into an actual garage, which is also a work in progress/storage space.
Had a lift for my stunt bike and other bike work, that I had been storing at a friend's garage. Brought that to the garage to make things a bit easier in terms of bending down.
Then a guy I ride with sometimes said he was getting rid of his workbench, on the day I was about to go buy wood and parts to build one of similar size (but with drawers). For the price of on-the-house, this one will do just fine for now.
Pulling the cylinder was a task and a half. Had to knock on the piston to get it unstuck.
Head and cylinder are going to need to be replaced.
With how bad the damage is, the bridge is just going to keep cracking, so no point in getting it fixed up. A bit gutted, but there's a few used ones that just need some light work that I've come across on ebay.
The Shop
2 more of the carnage.
Maybe send it to Tom Morgan for some of his magic and get it plated at the same time...
I wager Millenium might be able to fix it, but I'm shopping around for some options.
- Bike is completely torn down, minus the forks still being attached to the front wheel.
- Frame and swing arm have been lightly cleaned and will go to powder coat soon (once I establish how to fill in/cover all of the holes/threads that I don't want powder coating to get into -- ideally this week)
- Next steps will be splitting and cleaning the cases.
I started off quick, with the tear down, but have had a lot going on (even with all the quarantine fun) and haven't made quite as much progress these past 2 weeks. Hoping to get back to it!
- water pump isn't too pretty. I'm adding that to the list of new parts (ordering this weekend
- clutch basket it very worn. Thought about going the filing route, but figured putting in a freshy is the move, given what this build is turning into
- and some other pics of last nights work.
There's plenty of others that I haven't posted up yet. I'll try to stay more on top of updating, for the fun of it all.
Also has a cylinder coming in! Will need some work, but is in way better condition than mine. Big thanks to @dillpickle312 !
Brought frame and swing arm to powder coat.
Should've done it in one trip, but I'm going to also bring my triple clamps and linkage to the same shop.
Decided to replace all linkage bearings while I'm at all of this.
Will be ordering those this evening.
Any other recommendations on cylinder repair?
Millenium sent back their quote, and the other two shops have yet to respond.
That said, we're moving again!
Frame and swing arm are finally (officially) to powder coat!
Was between matte black and gloss black.
I left the shop telling him matte, but now I'm leaning towards gloss. Of course, nobody is picking up the phone at the shop now
I'll just have to ride over before they close, if I come to a conclusion on gloss vs matte ha.
Getting back to the engine work this week. Goal is to have it finished by end of September. (but we'll see, with the moving business).
I still have a few necessity parts, the biggest being a gas tank.
I emailed someone (I forget the guy) that a member had PM'd me about, but I never heard back.
If anyone knows of a tank for sale, please let me know! I've yet to find one that isn't $230+
Pit Row
Never uploaded the frame.
It's _still_ not put together.
Hoping to make some actual progress this coming weekend, now that some smaller parts that were seemingly lost in the move have been ordered and should be arriving in the next few days.
