The riders on the National scene may have had a weekend off, but the new blood and old school reigned at the annual Mammoth Motocross. Jeremy McGrath took the Open Pro class on Friday, as well as Sunday's 450 Pro Finals. MC had a decent start in the 450 main, but had to work to reel in and pass Suzuki's Ryan Dungey. Once past the early leader, he cruised to the win. In-between MC's main event Friday and Sunday wins, Yamaha's Josh Hill took the 250F title on Saturday. Josh is counting down the days (and races) left before he hits the nationals later this summer, and looked fast and smooth as he worked his way past early leader, Kevin Rookstool.
As scenic and well-groomed as the track is, it also has some teeth, as quite a few riders found out. Square-edged bumps caused quite a few flats, and riders were using added measures (like linding their tires with previously flattened tubes, and bumping up their tire pressure above normal) to make it through their motos. With the high altitude of the Eastern Sierras, jetting is also a challenge
If you've never made the trek to Mammoth for the race, either as a rider or a spectator, it's definitely worth the trip. For this edition, I took my son and we made it a spectating/camping trip, and spent part of each morning trout fishing, wildlife viewing, sightseeing...and if you're so inclined, the mountain biking is also stellar. Definitely worth checking out. www.mammothmotocross.com.
