Monster Energy Supercross: Dallas 2010 1

Breaking in the new Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas was the goal this weekend, and while the calendar may have just rolled over to Spring, you’d never have known it outside of the cozy confines of the most extravagant domed stadium ever seen. The temperatures were positively frigid, with light snow flurries falling from mid-afternoon on.

The battle was still as hot as ever between Ryan Dungey (Rockstar Makita Suzuki) and Ryan Villopoto (Monster Energy Kawasaki) atop the leaderboard in the Supercross class. Villopoto had taken four out the last five races, coming into Dallas, and was chopping away at Dungey’s points lead. But when they met up in their heat race, it was Dungey who put a move on Villopoto, en route to the win.

When the gate dropped in the main event, Nick Wey (TiLube/Babbit’s/MSR/Foremost Insurance Kawasaki) scored the Spike TV holeshot check, but was quickly displaced by Dungey, who’d bounced between riders on each side as they headed to the first turn. Meanwhile, Villopoto was stuck at mid-pack, and trying to work his way forward.

Davi Millsaps came back from a crash and DNF in Toronto to grab a solid second-place finish, with Trey Canard hot on his heels.

The big movers and shakers were the Honda Red Bull Racing duo of Davi Millsaps and Trey Canard. By the end of lap one, Davi was hot on the heels of Josh Hill (San Manuel / Yamaha / JSE) and he took over second spot on lap five. But Trey didn’t get one of his usual good starts, and was in sixth spot. From there he went to work, passing Wey, Justin Brayton (JGRMX Toyota/Muscle Milk/Yamaha), and then Josh Hill (San Manuel / Yamaha / JSE), which put him into third at the halfway point. In the latter stages of the race, he closed the gap to Millsaps, who was also closing on Dungey, but that’s how the finished. Villopoto’s race finished with him passing Brayton for fourth with two laps to go.

With Dungey’s win and Villpoto’s fourth-place finish, that resets the point lead back to 24, with six rounds left in the title chase. But as we’ve seen this season, anything can happen.

The Lites main event featured probably the biggest crash we’ve seen, with nearly every rider on the gate going down after Martin Davalos (DNA Shred Stix / Star Racing / Yamaha) snagging a Tuf-Block on the inside of the first turn, which launched him into Lites East points leader Christophe Pourcel (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki), and on down the line. Ryan Sipes (MotoConcepts Yamaha), Troy Adams (BTOSports.com/BBMX/Palmetto Suzuki), as well as Blake Baggett and Jake Moss (Rockstar Energy Suzuki), who were among of the few beneficiaries of the contact, as they managed to squirt by on the inside and outside of the carnage.

Justin Barcia finished up lap one in sixth place, and Christophe Pourcel was 17th after taking quite a while to remount. After two laps, Jake Moss went down hard, and after getting back on his feet, headed toward the Asterisk Mobile Medical unit at a brisk pace with a serious grimace on his face. We hope it was nothing serious. About the same time, Troy Adams also went down, so up front the running order was Sipes, Baggett and Justin Barcia (GEICO Powersports Honda), who was making a rapid charge back to the front. That got derailed a bit during a pass attempt on Blake Baggett, though, as Barcia damaged his front brake. While he was able to keep pace with Baggett, he was unable to do much to get by.

With the laps winding down, as usual, lappers became a factor. When we talked to Baggett after the race, he mentioned that there was no way he was going to get by Sipes without going for a really dirty move. But unfortunately, Sipes came up on a slower rider in the whoops, and got caught up on the wrong side of him at just the wrong time, and that allowed Blake Baggett to pull alongside and get by with two laps to go. From there, Baggett was able to hold him off and take his first win in the Lites class…and in his rookie Supercross season. The podium was rounded out by Sipes and Justin Barcia, and Martin Davalos had an amazing rebound after the first turn crash to finish in fourth spot.

Austin Stroupe (Rockstar Makita Suzuki) had been in fourth, but crashed about two-thirds of the way through the main and dropped down into the standings. But he rebounded at the end to take fifth and pull a little closer to Christophe Pourcel, who only made it back to seventh spot at the checkered flag, following his first turn crash. Strouple now trails Pourcel by just five points, and they’ll continue their battle next weekend in Jacksonville, FL.

Oh, and we have to admit, we like Pourcel’s win badges...
