We’re into round two of the 2009 Monster Energy Supercross season, and now have four different winners for the four main events run so far. It doesn’t get much better than that. But we were in for a few surprises in Arizona…

Over 46,000 fans came out to check out the action, despite the fact that the Arizona Cardinals were in a televised NFL playoff game at the same time. (No matter, they piped it onto the Chase Field scoreboard before the races started.)

After one of the biggest yard sales we’ve seen in quite a while at round one (the crash between Rockstar Makita Suzuki ‘s Chad Reed and L&M Racing / San Manuel / Yamaha” James Stewart last weekend in Anaheim Stadium), everyone was ready to see a head-to-head rematch, and they got it.

Last week’s winner, Josh Grant (JGRMX Toyota/Yamaha) jumped out front at the drop of the gate, though he was quickly passed by James Stewart. Chad Reed worked past Grant on lap three, and from there it was on. Reed chipped away at Stewart’s lead, and got close enough to show him a front wheel a time or two, but a mistake in the sand section cost Chad valuable time, and he had to restart his charge once again.

As the laps wound down, Reed was again closing on Stewart, but he seemed to not want to press the issue, and finished in second spot. Chad still enjoys a 15-point lead over James.

The scenarios surrounding the championship chase in the Lites West division changed quite a bit on Saturday night after both of last year’s Lites Supercross champions, Trey Canard (East), and Jason Lawrence (West) suffered crashes, and neither of them made the main event. That left the door wide open for someone to score a lot points…and that someone turned out to be Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey.

Initially, it was Jake Weimer who got the jump on the pack, and he led the first six circuits of the track before dropping his Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki in a sand section. That handed the lead to Dungey, who never bobbled. Ryan ended up with a five-second victory over Justin Brayton (Muscle Milk MDK KTM), and vaulted himself into the points lead in the Supercross Lites West region. Last week’s runner-up, Ryan Morais, showed consistency by once again finishing on the podium, and he’s now only two points behind Dungey in the championship standings.
