And why is this? Fed. is now monitoring "satisfaction surveys." Fall below the standard, less fed reimbursement. The big push is to bend over to kiss ass as if the pt.s are at the Ritz in hospitals across the country.

I treat all my patients with respect and dignity. But I'm there to save their ass, not kiss it.

BTW, thanks for offering up your experience. I've heard similar stories from my sister in Phoenix and my brother who's at UT Southwestern. It's really crazy how expensive everything is but for sure, the hospitals are usually not the ones raking in the money, and those examples are perfect to show how just the threat of a lawsuit can double or triple the cost or a patient's total bill.

Not a Dr., just a lowly second career nurse. Hope I didn't make that impression.

I work a critical care unit, my patients are typically heart attacks, strokes, or multiple over lapping chronic illness (i.e.. copd with diabetes, with cardiac history and pneumonia), lots of renal stuff as well, along with the occasional drug seeker. They either are a bad day away from a vent in the icu or a good day away from the regular medical floor.

UTSW is the shit, I did research there during my prior BS but was young, stupid and left.

Let me see if I understand some of this correctly.

So if an insured individual decides to go with a higher deductable to get a lower premium then the health care providers actually make more money on care?

Using the example given previously of insurance paying $7k on a $36k procedure, then the insurance company would pay a smaller percentage (say $5k) and then the patient would pay their $2.5k deductable.

Wow, that is pretty jacked up.

When there's a deductible, the insurance takes whatever they reimburse and subtracts the deductible from it to calculate the reimbursement. The provider gets the same amount, no matter how the split between the insured and the insurance company is defined.
