Principal's message about a possible shooting

So I get another recorded message from my son's Middle School Principal last night. I had already got a couple earlier this week about several girls getting into fights at his school. The fights led to threats being made on Myspace/Internet. The Principal reiterrated how this behavior would not be tolerated and some girls have been suspended and so on.
Well, the message last night added a new wrinkle. Seems someone at the school spray painted on one of the walls that there would be a shooting "Friday at 2:30". Not to worry the Principal assured, all the teachers will be there today along with the police.
Uh, yea right.
Needless to say my son is getting a three day weekend.

I'm guessing that's what they hoped would happen...everyone stay away.

Hope this clears up for you. I imagine as a parent there's not much anyone can do to make you not worry about this stuff once it's been put on the table in your school.

Damn, that sucks. I couldn't send my kids on a day like that either, although with all the armed law enforcement standing by near that school the real action will probably be somewhere else....

I say keep all kids home. However, I say the parents, fully armed, go in the place of their kids.

I think the internet and cell phones have greatly contributed to kids pushing the crazy limits. They are exposed to so much more than when I was a tiddler.
Kids (not all, but many) get away with more at home than in the past.
My best high school friend and I had our shotguns in his trunk many days at school, shells in glove box. The reason is directly after school we'd go hunting for rabbits, or whatever wildlife moved at the time.
Times have certainly changed.

I don't know what's doing it to the kids. I'd expect it's a combination of two parents at work (and so busy trying to pay off their Lexus instead of raising their kids), TV glamorizing the violence, and same with the internet.

When I grew up, I don't remember a single gun incident in our town (we were a decent size city) in the schools. Once in a blue moon someone would bring in a knife...but that was considered nuts. It was almost always just a regular fist fight, and the loser learned to shut his/her mouth.

I will say that the girl fights I've seen (not the porn stuff on the internet...the real deal) were really nasty.

It all goes down to parents & parenting.

Kids who come from homes that raise kids right - no amount of technology, TV violence, internet stuff, none of that affects them.

Its ALL about parents and the homelife culture.

I do not think kids get away with more. My son was in a fight where the other kid kept picking,picking, then started punching. My son got the better of the kid and they wanted to suspend both kids. I told the Principal that I would never punish my kid for defending himself and I had talked to the principal twice this year about the other kids bullying, he said that was " school policy " In the principal's office I told my son to go to the globe and pick anywhere in the world he would like to spend 3 days. The guy asked me if that was the right example, I told him if my son was picking on a kid I would hold my son while the kid smacked him , but I would NEVER punish my kid for defending himself. They let it go this time.

WPCJS, you bring up one other thing I failed to mention: diluting everything to a situation where there is no right or wrong; there's just wrong. It's too bad we adults (I'll have to blame this one on us) aren't making those responsible own-up to their actions. And, it's too bad we're making the innocent pay for those who aren't responsible.

Well said. I raise my kids pretty old school and there would be hell to pay if my son was picking on someone, but like I said I would NEVER tell him to sit there and take a beating. Oddly enough I know the other kids dad and he said he would be upset with the school if they punished my son and he would take care of the matter. It has never happened again.

recently in the news there was a girl videotaped being beat up, you probably saw clips on local news. All she did was cower while the girls hit her, she didn't hit back.
The attackers are now in big trouble, and should be.
I wonder what would have happened if the girl fought back and kicked the shit out of some of the agressers. Right or wrong, I bet SHE would get in trouble as well, or problems against attackers would be lessened due to getting their asses beat back. Like I said, agree with that or not, you know damn well if she fought back and won, the outcome of who gets in what trouble completely changes here.

Last year at the school my son attends, there was a hit list supposedly out with several students names on them. Also, the hit was to take place during their talent show at the school. The bad part about all of this is that the principal and school never let anything out in the open about what was going on. They tried to keep everything on the hush hush, but word leaked out. I went to check my son out of school and they thought I was crazy. I later found out that none of the information I was receiving was true. But it sure would have been nice if the principal or the school had told the parents exactly what was happening.

Kids or not - put a god damned bullet in their head and be done with it. Their parents are obviously fucking idiots, the kids are already a waste of skin, and the world would be better of without any of them in it.

Some people say that our western culture is becoming feminized. If true, we are limiting accountability in our children and elevating rebellion in them.

There have been many good reasons given on here. The breakup of families is a big one. TV violence, mindless promiscuity in entertainment, debasing music...the list goes on. What is needed?

I'd like to suggest that the answer is found in the last chapter of the Old Testament. God promises there that before He comes back to Earth, He will send Elijah the prophet to us. What will that do for us? "He (Elijah) will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to the fathers."

Many of us here are fathers. What would our families look like if our hearts were "turned" to our children, and theirs to us?

The Taiwanese culture must've been visited by Elijah a long time ago.

They seem to understand the value of the family. Usually one child will be responsible to take care of the parents (instead of brushing them aside or throwing them in an old folks' home). The grandparents are always around to watch over the children while the parents work. So, the children are raised with the care and attention of the family, not some babysitter or day care employee. The result is kids that are "naturally" respectful and well-behaved, and it reflects in their crime rates (about 1/8th that of the US).
